I just found this during the course of work and found it interesting. I don't know about anyone else here, but I never knew this about the codes on produce. This is good to know info. for those of us who care what we eat.

Sure. This is from the blog:

"Price Look-Up codes (PLUs) are printed on the small stickers attached to fresh produce at the grocery store. These codes are used to make check-out and inventory control easier for the store. They also tell you key pieces of information about the produce, such as how it was grown.

Conventionally grown food can be identified by a four-digit number, such as 4011 for bananas.

Organic food is identified by a a five-digit number that begins with a nine, such as 94011 for bananas.

Genetically modified food is indicated by a five-digit number that begins with an eight, such as 84805 for a vine ripe tomato."

I think these are the same stickers they scan when the cashier rings you up.

I had to remember 50 of those PLUs just to get a job in a grocery store. Now, I see people with little hand booklets for look-ups (which we didn't have the luxury of.)

I did not know about the 5-digit GMO tag. Thanks for teaching me something with this thread. I will be sure to avoid those 5 digit'd fruits and vegies. Choose the "9" folks!
