It's Time to Medicate the Masses... oh wait...

For what it's worth, here's a personal story for you:

Not long ago, there was a conference held for the Attorneys General for all 50 states. There were several governors and other high-ranking officials present, including the VP of the US himself.

I was not an attendee, just a lowly worker, but I did take note of one very important fact:

All the food, booze, etc. was paid for by pharmaceutical companies. These folks were living it up, all sponsored by the drug makers. And the attendees were setting the agenda for the entire nation. Ponder that.

Conflict of interest doesn't even begin to describe it, IMO.

I'm a registered nurse. The biggest pharmaceutical scam and the most expensive has to the cholesterol drugs. Please, people, look at all the information out there. Tons of it, don't take my word for it. Those pills destroy your liver. Your cholesterol gets low, your liver makes it by itself.

The funniest part is where the pharma companies say that even if your cholesterol isn't high, you should take Crestor, any how.

Do you have any concept of the difference antidepressant medications can make? They don't "numb" you at all, only regular doses of tranquilizers will do that (take my word on it, I've been on both). There's more people than you know that wouldn't be able to function without antidepressants/anti-psychotics.

I suppose "Numb" should not be taken literally. anti-depressants take your cares away. They take "the edge off" or Numb you down. Your not acting on your own accord, the drug is acting for you, maybe thats what they meant? Also, lets ask ourselves why all these people wouldnt be able to function without these powerful medications? I don't think all theses people NEED the medication, i think they are bored and dissattisfied with their lives, and they need some excitment, or they need to feel better about their lives, no mystery there.

the fact that some of these drugs exist in the first place is wrong, IMO. I am not going to talk semantics about how many lives penicilin save. I know how many lives it saves. I am not going to talk about peniclin or insulin, these are good drugs and there aren't any instances of abuse. people arent hanging out on street corners banging insulin into their veins. People are snorting vicoden and adderall, and they are shooting oxycodon. powerful powerful drugs. Have you ever taken an adderall, or a vicoden ghost?

I would not describe an anti depressant as a powerful medication, they are pretty tame drugs unless you are on an extremely high dose. They also don't act for you and do not numb you. They alter the amount of certain chemicals in the brain to create an even mood so a person does not get stuck in a funk. But not everyone who has depression is experiencing some type of situational issue. Some people have every reason to be excited or happy about life but a chemical imbalance in their brain causes them to be depressed.

I wager that anything, that can alter you brain chemistry in such a way, IS powerful. I know people who have taken and still take anti-deppresants, I just wonder what the side-effects might be 20 years from now, or 30?

I replied without reading your whole post, sorry, and thank you for the post,

if your brain is re-wired by something in order to make you act a certain way, I would call that having some sort of control, or acting for you . Also, explain who these people are who have every reason to be excited or happy? I live in the first world, the microwaved, minivanned world I assume you live in? In general I think alot of us don't get any fulfillment from our lives even if we have, decent salary, good family, nice house. In general people don't create anymore, they don't fix things, they don't grow things they don't take pride in their craftsmanship and hardwork, like I said in general, we can all point to specific instances.

You are missing the point. NOBODY should be forced to take any medication unless failure to do so would cause a serious threat to society. In the case of my colleague, she was NOT a threat to anyone for refusing to take the medications. She refused the medication because she felt that her depression and anxiety as a result of a horrific rape WERE NORMAL REACTIONS. She wanted to deal with herself and her feelings without covering them up with drugs. In her case, she was placed in a position by the court where she was MANDATED to take drugs she didn't want and didn't feel she needed simply because some doctor recommended them. Personally, I feel this is a serious violation of her rights.

Especially the bipolar and schizophrenic. Not mitigating the chronically depressed.

The problem is that everybody that walks in the door is given a "diagnosis", thus relegating the truly mentally ill that really need to be taken care of, who are hardly in a place to defend themselves, to secondary status.

The first thing the pharma companies do when "testing" a new drug, is get rid of the truly chronically depressed and end up with a bunch of 18 - 25 year old females who just broke up with their boyfriends. This is told to me by an intern with the University of Wisconsin, told to him by a professor.

Our healthcare really needs a revamping, but who's going to do it? The Big Pharma?

no amount of big words can make up for the overly medicated masses. Sometimes we wield our words to decieve, just for the sake of it, too many lies, too many lies, la la la la la

people who have crippling mental disabilities do need to be taken care of, and I agree with a poster who replied earlier, anyone who takes pharmas, deserves to. Because there is little else to be done but whine and complain hmmmm? So integrate health and heathly choices into your life. And watch helplessly but happily as all others trip and roll down the stairs and decay hmmmm.

An Intern... lol I watch a show the other day, they had interns running around this obstacle course, tripping over props, it was quite entertaining.
