You've probably seen the movie minority report, Tom cruise is preventing bad guys from crime before they ever commit them. I'm not talking about the psychic water lady whatevers. I'm saying especially with the recent shootings, and finding out that Holmes psychiatrist contacted college police (this might be exactly what they're going for) , could we start seeing more and more people being arrested, charged, and prosecuted for crimes they have yet to commit?

Well here is this...

The system, dubbed FAST – or Future Attribute Screening Technology – was just an idea in 2007 and is now already in operation, according to the June 2010 document. FAST collected or retained information on unspecified members of the public in at least one field test conducted in an undisclosed location in the Northeast. A limited trial was also conducted with DHS employees.

The Justice Department is also using a System to Assess Risk (STAR) data-mining program that will let a user enter the names of terrorist suspects into a computer and calculate, based on 35 factors, how likely each person is to be a terrorist threat. According to Wired, STAR makes use of "a massive database of public records ranging from fishing licenses to bankruptcy proceedings. That system is owned by LexisNexis."

Gun control seems like a distraction to me for some reason, could this be one of the major aces TPTB have up their sleeves? Well you remember that speech Obama gave in 2010? Broken down pretty well www.youtube.com... if you don't mind Rachel Maddow. Obama uses words like preventive and develop an appropriate legal regime?

There's more about all this to found. What are your thoughts on this folks? Opinions or information is appreciated.

In this case you would not be "arrested" you would be involuntarily commited to mental hospital for "treatment". While it may sound like a good idea to the uninformed but most of these shootings are carried out by people that are already being "helped" by psychiatrists.

I can speak from a fairly knowledgeable perspective, though I have to be brief as its well past time to get to bed! I'll try to remember to pop back in and follow up tomorrow.

"Predictive Modeling" is the industry term for this. I worked for a long time as what is essentially a liason between the math geniuses and techies and customers. This meant ai had to understand the concepts and the basics of the workings, while being able to explain it to people who weren't math geniuses and techies, and vice versa, in my time with one of the major credit bureaus.

Short how-it-works: you look at a bunch of factors and rate them, then look down the road a period of time, and find which of those factors most closely correlate with the "outcome." you then use the top "x" number of factors, I.e. The 35 most predictive factors, and develop an algorith. From that algorith PM you can then determind things like: a person with a credit score of 640 is 75% likely to have at least one account go seriously delinquent in the next two years, or a person with an 840 "in the market" score is 92% likely to purchase a new car in the $25000-40000 range in the next 18 months, etc.

The thing is, the predictive capability is extremely accurate, but rarely close to 100% even someone with an 800 FICO score may have. 3% likelihood of developing "bad" accounts, and someone with a 500 score might have a 10% chance of never being late again. To use this to decide top targets to look out for? Probably useful - to use it to arrest, detain, etc. Well, don't ever assume anything will ever be accurate enough to do so. Once we do, we're done as a society.

Thanks for the replies. What I'm gathering is basically we as individuals are becoming more and more, according to them, information and equations. With the likes of google and facebook, it all makes perfect sense.

A team of world-leading neuroscientists has developed a powerful technique that allows them to look deep inside a person's brain and read their intentions before they act.

"Using the scanner, we could look around the brain for this information and read out something that from the outside there's no way you could possibly tell is in there. It's like shining a torch around, looking for writing on a wall," said John-Dylan Haynes at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Germany, who led the study with colleagues at University College London and Oxford University.

The use of brain scanners to judge whether people are likely to commit crimes is a contentious issue that society should tackle now, according to Prof Haynes. "We see the danger that this might become compulsory one day, but we have to be aware that if we prohibit it, we are also denying people who aren't going to commit any crime the possibility of proving their innocence."
