Waterborne disease kills three children
every minute . This handheld device, called
Kopper – which costs only $A2.50 to make –
could prevent some of these deaths.

Designed by Balin Lee, a graduate of the
University of Western Sydney , it removes
99.99 per cent of all parasites, viruses and
bacteria found in contaminated water.

The device works by squeezing water
through a microfilter, removing anything
larger than 0.1 micrometre, which includes
Escherichia coli and Giardia. It then fries
anything left with electrolysis, which splits
the oxygen and hydrogen molecules,
removing tinier pathogens in the water.

Brilliant stuff.. but it gets much better!

Kopper is powered by piezoelectric
generators that convert kinetic energy into
an electrical current: powering the device
requires only a few shakes.

This is innovation at its finest.. imagine if the 'Gates foundation' sent a few million of these to Africa.. the amount of life saved would be massive.

This sounds too good to be true. How is it possible that it can be produced for $2.50 There is also no demonstration of the device.

Colloidal silver pretty much kills all pathogens too.

Doesn't get much cheaper than home made CS too, most expensive thing is the .999 - .9999 silver wires. Takes 10-15 minutes to make. Kills MRSA and seems to be beneficial for preventing tooth decay also.

Clean water is the most important thing we all should be aware of.

Nope, I'm a realist. I also live in a developing country. I live in a country where access to potable water is a serious problem. A country where many people have no electricity.

What great technology and a such a worthy cause. Issues and solutions like these are what all of us who are healthy and have cash to spare should be working and focusing on, not the next trip to the mall, the mental garbage on tv, the stock market (casino) etc.

Sorry, but if you separate the oxygen and hydrogen from out of the water, you end up with two gases, neither of which you can drink. How is this helpful? Does it get recombined? How on earth is this better than using solar stills to create distilled water and fresnel lenses can be made at least that inexpensively! Filters ultimately clog. I don't see the point. More moving parts than a lens, more complicated design. Kinda Rube Goldberg compared to a simple lens.

You just have to filter water enough to get all the large particles out then boil it. How hard is it to find some sticks and make a fire.

If the area is so desolate you can't even find some sticks to burn THEN MOVE.

Scarcity of food and water is now man made thier is no reason for it.

This country gives away alot of food but we waste like 10 times that. I understand salt water filtration but not fresh, its redundant.

Some other part of the world, people chew grass and drink puddle water to live.

This sort of invention give light or at least promises. The problem of the world is not wasted resource but allocation of it.

Incorrect.

That occurred because the gentleman wasn't using .999 pure silver.
If I recall correctly, he used Stirling Silver... Not a very smart chappy.

I get the same feeling, it is an ad for raising money. I remember when I read about the life straw a couple years ago I believe, no info on how to buy the product, evidently only for third world countries. If they want to raise money for sending their water purifiers, then sell them to the "survivalists" aka, prepared people in any country, at a premium price and hold back monies to donate their product to third world countries. Lifestraw is now available on Amazon, one of the few I have looked at in the past. I personally have seen too many organizations that want donations to "develop", when in fact they claim their product is already perfected and ready for third world countries. When you read the blog notes which sometimes go back for years, everyone is asking where to purchase this great item but they never get any replies.

Here's one of my examples which I can't figure out how to purchase. Could be I'm tired after a long day but it sure sounds interesting and I wouldn't mind purchasing it. Here are the enticers (Remarks in quotations are my own.)

Thanks for posting that. I was a bit annoyed and miffed when I was told I had no faith in humanity just because I questioned the device.

If we had all the answers to our problems there wouldn't be a point to living.

Thing is, with every new discovery and new technology and new change in lifestyle we're finding new problems. Problems that weren't present before or weren't considered resolvable.

One has to wonder how deep the rabbit hole is. How far does the universe go? Just how small is our intelligence? Once we conjoin classic and quantum physics for a unified model, what then?

Even as we solve world hunger, we have to solve spiritual and intellectual hungers. Hungers for space exploration and hungers for everything imaginable. I hope we never quench all hunger.

Which makes me wonder. (I wasn't the first one to think of this.) Are we just the playthings of a superior being that had reached the limits of its progression and so pretends to be us to jolly itself? What if we reached -our- limits? What if there was nothing more to explore or to know? No more areas to expand into? What if we had become gods of our own domain and were trapped there?

Are the limits of knowledge and living infinite? If not then the point of living becomes deafened. Nothing more to know. No more places to be. We'd be trapped and haunted by the past.
