One of these days the earth will have a new ocean suddenly form.

Once the lava undernearth the ground moves out the way, a tectonic plate will suddenly sink downwards. Right?

Think this can happen? Or can't it?

What happens once lava chambers deep down under the earth's crust lose most of their lava? Wouldn't a tectonic plate then be forced to sink?

Get ready, folks! It's coming! A day when a massive sink hole forms a new ocean. Or extends an ocean. It could have happened a long time ago, come to think. Ancient civilizations vanished because of such a thing maybe.

Discuss.

Kind of like what happened to Atlantis, causing a huge tsunami (the great flood), wiping out most of organized humanity, leaving only the well prepared and lucky to survive?
Most ancient civilizations lived close to the water, for obvious reasons, drinking water, trade routes, food, Etc.
Maybe in 7000 years scholars will talk of the ancient land of california where people glowed, we know this because historians tell us they were all stars!

Oh all of the knowlege we have lost.

When you consider how these things work- solid plates float atop the lava- I don't think that there will be an episode that you are predicting. When the ground is split far enough, magma comes to the top just like what happens when you cut your skin. Blood wells up and seals the wound. Sometimes there's a scar, sometimes not. There is a huge plate split happening on the African plate even as we speak called the Great Rift Valley. If you google it, you will find a lot of information having to do with geology, plate movements, and how the surface of the earth works. Enjoy.

Just a theory, or based on inside knowledge of some sort, which you don't have to spill or anything? I've heard this before, not the cause being the plasma, but that the plates do go down, and then that forces other areas up. And that it has happened in the past. Do you think its going to happen soon?

Sorry OP, but no, nada, never gonna happen.

The mineral composition of the continental plates is composed of significantly lighter weight material, which causes them to float above the deeper rock (who's composition is of highly Fe rich material).

The mantle isn't some bubbly sea of molten lava: It's largely composed of viscous, slow-moving rock. Think silly putty or thick taffy, compressed to insane pressures. And that's deeper towards the core. Near the crust, there is an additional solid layer called the lithosphere

A void can't exist under the crust. Gravity pulls everything equally to the center of the sphere...the pressures acting upon the planet would backfill any void before it could happen!

Even if a plate could sink, the sheer size and materials involved would require that the event take millions of years to occur. Not anything to lose sleep over, I'd safely say.

I wonder if flood insurance would cover lava flooding?
