The quake was recorded at a depth of 45.9km, about 28km north-west of Sinabang. This is some 300km southwest of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a statement saying there was a "very small possibility" of a tsunami, as the specific area of the earthquake does not have a historical record of generating the damaging waves. The earthquake was registered at 10:44am AEST. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has issued a statement that there is no tsunami threat to Australia.
