Without a "can listen" spirit, a "can do" spirit is impotent.

A decade?

Civil War, 1860-65
Reconstruction, 1865-76
Spanish-American War, 1898
Lynchings, 1882-64
Philippine Insurgency, 1899-1902
Boxer Rebellion, 1899-1901
Mexican Revolution, 1910-20
World War I, 1917-18
Belleau Wood, 2nd Marne, Meuse-Argonne
Haiti, 1918-20
Russian Civil War, 1918-20
Chicago gang wars, 1920s
Nicaragua, 1926-33
Spanish Civil War, 1936-39
World War II, 1941-45
Casualties: Burma, Italy, North Africa, NW Europe, Pacific
Major battles: Anzio, Battle of the Atlantic, Bulge, Guadalcanal, Guam, Iwo Jima, Leyte, Leyte Gulf, Market-Garden, Midway, Monte Casino, Normandy, Okinawa, Pearl Harbor, Peleliu, Saipan
Atrocities
Air raids: Berlin, Dresden, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tokyo
Korean War, 1950-53
Chosin Reservoir
Dominican Republic, 1965
Vietnam War, 1965-73
Tet, 1968
Lebanon, 1983
Grenada, 1983
Panama, 1989
Gulf War, 1990-91
War on Terrorism, 1993-
Kosovo, 1998
Afghanistan, 2001-
Iraq, 2003-

I fail to see how wars based on federal "must-do" policies have diminished or tarnished our individual need to overcome those who finance and continually beat the war drums. I would think the above list would be even further cause for us to finally find our own will and determination to put a stop to the bloodshed and waste. Not to mention putting an end to the continuous destructive lawmaking that results from our participation in needless wars so we can start rebuilding our own turf on our own terms.

Well, you have a really good point. Even in the 60's and 70's there was "pro-government" agenda in schools. However...a lot of the curriculum was still a regionally or district "choice". A small school could still "choose" to teach solid fundamentals. When the fed took over education, that began to change. In my humble opinion, the last nail in the coffin of public education was the "no student left behind" act. When I grew up...lots of students got left behind...it's called "failing" and you get to do that grade over! Now we dumb down the masses so everyone comes out equal...bad idea...really bad idea.

I'm with you 100% on the no student left behind BS. It was the last nail. But the public school system was failing miserably for years prior to that and as a result somewhere around 2 million parents took matters into their own hands and homeschool their children. A student is one of thousands of faces to a teacher, but they are one in a million to their parents (or at least should be).
