Syria moves chemical weapons before wider offensive: defector

(Reuters) - A senior Syrian military defector said President Bashar al-Assad's forces were moving chemical weapons across the country for possible use in a military retaliation for the killing of four top security officials.

"The regime has started moving its chemical stockpile and redistributing it to prepare for its use," said General Mustafa Sheikh, citing rebel intelligence obtained in recent days.

"They are moving it from warehouses to new locations," he told Reuters in an interview in southern Turkey, close to the Syrian border. "They want to burn the country. The regime cannot fall without perpetrating a sea of blood."

Syria's 16-month conflict has been transformed since Wednesday, when a bomb killed four members of Assad's narrow circle of kin and lieutenants, including his powerful brother-in-law, defense minister and intelligence chief.

Sheikh's comments could not be independently verified and Syria has denied any such move.

I know most people are talking about the shootings in Colorado, but I thought I would put this up because I think it is important. This surely will just push Israel and the U.S. into ground intervention in Syria. Although it hasn't been confirmed, TPTB will most likely take defector's words as the truth.

Ahhh.... The magic defectors come to make their appearance. Always a few of those around somewhere. What were the defectors in 2002 claiming about Iraq? How many Chem and Bio threats could be deployed, as the world seemed to hear from such sources? Gee...didn't seem to find much when we got there though.

I don't doubt Assad has them. Syria is among the only nations that have legally been making them..pretty openly. Assad just isn't a raving lunatic, ready for a rubber room on the infamous funny farm. That's what it would take to use NBC weapons at this point in time, IMO. Perhaps...he's moved and hidden them so the REBELS don't get them. There is a novel idea. It just burns Obama and Clinton up too, it's easy to see.

Any launch on Isreal means automatic Isreali retaliation on Assad which would cause all peoples of the surrounding nations around Isreal to demand a responce on Isreal, making the "Arab Spring" go into uber overdrive everywhere lighting the whole region ablaze figurtivly and literaly.

Any launch means instant US military action, the US military has plenty of units already inplace ready to respond right away to a series of attacks theatre wide, which in all likelyhood would lead to the instant closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran in responce to the attack on their ally and proxy. The closure makes a US military responce guarenteed while at the same time crashing the US economy and making oil prices spike well past $150-$200 further destroying an already weak economy and almost killing the Dollar.

Negative. If Syria hits Israel and Israel retaliates, its very likely that no other countries would hit Israel back other than Iran or Hizbollah and even then that isnt a given. Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey wont do anything and most likely Egypt wont either if they still want that 3 billion a year the US has pledged continue to give them as long as peace with Israel is maintained.
