The United Nations is about as effective as The League of Nations that preceeded it.

"Let's talk about our neighbor that's causing lots of problems, but if he's got the protection of two of the biggest bullies on the block, he can get away with it and just carry on".

Glorifed neighborhood watch scheme.

Tossers both!

Hope the rebels win quickly thus saving some innocent lives.

You are not talking about the opposition winning, you are talking about western backed Al Qaeda terrorists winning. The real opposition has clearly distanced themselves from any kind of violence. Stop consuming the MSM.

I'm glad China and Russia are not cooperating, regardless of their records of humanitarianism. It's time some nations with power got in the United Nation's face. They've been intentionally killing millions in 3rd world experiments for decades. It's disheartening to see it takes evil (Russia gov, China gov) to confront evil (U.N., U.S. gov) but I find solace that they're not in alignment.

Most news out of Syria has been blatant lies or unverified nonsense anyway. Any actual massacre of women and children, if even true, is just as likely the work of the Mossad, MI6, or CIA death squads who murder citizens and frame the government like they were caught doing in Argentina and Peru. They want to topple the government and possibly start war.

Now they'll have war but not "war" with an uneven playing field against Syria. Instead they will have WWIII.

Your move, U.N. I hope your entire General Assembly and "Security" Council have a fatal plane crash right atop of Bill Gates and Dick Cheney while they're comparing albums of people they've killed. Throwing some big international bankers into the mix wouldn't hurt either, but I digress....

Good for China and Russia!
I miss the good old days when the US was the good guy and these other 2 were not.
Maybe someday we can be the good guys standing up for peoples rather than corporate interests...

Ironic, that the only reason these countries vetoed this, IS because of the money, they can make, from Syria.

Russia and China are CORPORATIONS.

Syria received significant financial aid from Persian Gulf Arab states as a result of its participation in the Persian Gulf War, with a sizable portion of these funds earmarked for military spending. In 2005, Russia forgave Syria of three-fourths, or about $9.8 billion, of its $13.4 billion Soviet-era debt. Russia wrote off the debt in order to renew arms sales with Syria. As of 2011, arms contracts with Russia, Syria's main arms supplier, were worth at least $4 billion.

Among the violations were sales to Iran by China’s Dalian Sunny Industries, also known as LIMMT; sales of ballistic-missile goods to Syria; and transfers by Shanghai Technical By-Products International Corp. to Iran of ballistic-missile items.

China Selling Missiles To Iran, Syria and Pakistan

And Yes. America also, plays this game.

Excellent posts on here. I am pleased that Some are not fooled by the lies about the unfolding events in the Middle East. Thats good. But where are all the warmongers on ATS?

I expected this thread to be a raging argument for and against humanitarian aid and regime change and intervention and no fly zones and Free Syrian Armys, and Humanitarian Corridors. Then theres the WMD and Massacres and brutal regime and terrible dictators. All lies perpetrated by the complicit Media, who lead the flag waving parade like so many times before.

All that blowhard is cover for the real intent over there and this time it appears in word at least that the rest of the world ain't buying it any more either. They know from past experience where it leads. Can America back down? I doubt it. Thats the problem with power and greed. There are no limits to it. Given that there is one more prize still to be had, it will prove irresistible.

Yah, so their is no mandate. Yah, there is "veto" in the council. That didn't stop America in Bosnia. There was no UN mandate then either but US and Nato allies went ahead and began bombing anyway. So jets are not overhead... yet. A slow strangulation of Syria's economy, government and peoples is underway just the same and will simply take longer. That is the most dangerous part. The mandate is denied to Libya-ize Syria, yet these nations in the region and the UN are not stupid. They know America is behind the insurgency in Syria. They know that we are attempting to secure ever more territory and resources in the entire region. Any fool can see that.

What will they really do to stop the empire from continuing on its reckless course to self destruction? Can we really be that stupid? Don't we know that empires who thought they could conquer the world have always failed in the end? Always...

Russias concern is to deny victory to the west,

Moscow will not give up Damascus, as Russia’s foreign minister has made clear – despite rebels’ latest success in targeting the heart of the Assad regime. At stake here, beyond Syria, is the restoration of Russian power in relation to the west.

Russia’s relations with Syria date back to the emigration to Turkey and Syria of Circassian minorities in the 19th century and this link still influences Russia’s perception of the Syrian crisis. The fear is that chaos in Syria, if followed by an Islamist victory, might radicalise the Russian Caucasus. Moreover, Syria has traditionally been a counterweight to Turkey, especially when Turkish-Syrian relations were troubled. If the Damascus regime fell, Moscow’s southern flank would be weakened. Indeed, the regime’s fall would cut Russia out of the Middle East, where it has met with one setback after another over the past 50 years.

Of course, the counter-argument is that the more Moscow supports Damascus, the more it jeopardises its position in Syria. But Russia does not think in these terms. It does not seek to adapt to a changing world but to return to the old world by preserving what is left of it. Russia is fighting national decline not with renewal or development but with systematic political obstruction.

Russia’s decline in the Middle East began in 1971, when Anwar Sadat. president of Egypt, expelled Soviet military advisers. The Russians were unable to make up for this defeat in the region because Iraq was too unpredictable and Iran too uncontrollable. Syria has the advantage of being highly predictable and perfectly controllable. It is predictable because Syrians have always known just how far to push against the west or Israel – their realism evident in Damascus’s silence after Israel destroyed a nuclear reactor Syria was building with the help of North Korea. It is also controllable because the country has very few allies besides Russia and Iran. The regime has no cards to play and, despite an apparent opening to the west in recent years, is unreformed.

Moscow sees Syria as the perfect friend. Relations might sometimes be strained by the big military debt Damascus has incurred with Moscow. Yet the stability of Syrian policy is appealing to the Russians because it closely resembles theirs. Both countries defend their interests by compromising as little as possible with the west, short of resorting to force. Both maintain authoritarian and nationalist regimes for which doing business with the west need not imply adopting its model of democracy and human rights. There have been close contacts between the Russian and Syrian elites since the mid-1950s, especially between their armies and intelligence communities

Why do we even have a UN security council if Russia and China vetoes everything?

Same can be said about the US when they constantly block resolutions that go against Israel. It goes both ways.

Guys,

All of you miss the key reason why Putin's clique protects Assad so vigorously. It's not about the peronality of Assad, not about Russia's ties to Syria, not about the people of Syria, and not even much about the arms exports. The true reason is that Putin is gravely afraid of any foreign power depriving him of his power. From the very first months of his rule, consolidating and securing power was his primary activity. He was very happy when he manged to take full control over the army, police and secret services, then over all the media, then over all the big businesses, over the parlaiment, over opposition partiesa and groups, over regional governemnts, etc. He is obsessed with power and his greates nightmare is losing it. He apparently believs that only outside forces have enough capacity to kick his ass. First he was completely shocked and angry when the Ornage revolution succeeded in the Ukraine and then in other ex-Soviet republics, probably with some degree of external support. Following that, he increased control over every aspects of people's lives, no group of even a few people with some political or otherwise non-profit goals can exist now in Russia without being monitored and deranged. Now when he regained confidence, it's the Arab spring taking place, a new tactic of ousting dictators that he completely missed. He is afraid that similar things may happen close to Russia's borders, or even in Russia itself. So he wants to teach the world to stay out of all kinds of domestic conflicts, becuase obviously with zero outside support for the opposition dictators win.

How can you say this?
Does the US not represent freedom and democracy?
Atrocities and massacres are being committed, the people struggling for freedom and democracy, and all these powers acting like silly little children, whining about their sphere of influence. Syria needs some sort of help. Maybe just provide arms or send in medics.
The stubbornness of these countries appalls me.

Haha, so says the man sporting a Masonic/Illuminatic symbol as his picture.

The US represents Freedom and Democracy? Is that what they told you before bringing in the NDAA and Patriot Acts or The President's 'Kill List'..
Yeah, people are struggling for freedom and democracy but your own police force is cracking their skulls and imprisoning them indefinitely.

Your military bombed the poop out of Gaddaffi's Libya (even though the majority of the population supported his rule but feared speaking out in case the NTC killed them and under whose rule the Life expectancy of the average Libyan was just one year under the US and higher than most 'civilized' nations) and then gave weapons to Bahrain and Yemen but kept your beaks shut when those weapons were being used to suppress their people.

Your hypocrisy and ignorance astounds me. Do you truly believe everything the Govt. says? If so you had better line up for that RFID chip and some mercury inoculations.
