Texas to Ban Critical Thinking That Challenges Religon?

Whoa there!

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

Can someone explain to me how behavior modification is involved with OBE (wikipedia)?

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs

Can someone explain to me how the above are "relabeled" OBE?

I think there is some mass confusion going on here promulgated years ago by the severely kooky severely conservatives that William F. Buckley warned us about.

I think Dr. John W. Traphagan is the messenger and not the villain here.

While this position from conservatives is unsurprising, it bodes ill for the maintenance of a healthy democracy.

I have no problems with religions unless they force their beliefs on others. I believe in scientific research but also know if science is left to go into power over everyone it will be worse than any religion ever was. Power corrupts people and power creates evidence to reinforce it's policies. Science is not immune to the influence of power. Checks and balances are needed in society. Look at history to get verification of what I see, history is littered with how advancements in science's technology have created problems in the world. Technology may have advanced but mankind has not advanced that much. Power rules.

Ok. So, would the Texas GOP be fine with "values clarification, critical thinking skills and similar programs" that are NOT using behavior modification? Would they be fine with OBE that is NOT using behavior modification?

Dear desert,

Aw, gee, cut me a little slack will you? I'm not a Texan and I'm not part of any party's organization at even the lowest level. How am I supposed to know what the Texas GOP is thinking?

I can try to interpret that plank though, knowing that I could be completely off. (Besides, party planks are never intended to be detailed legislative proposals.)

I think they're concerned with both the behavior modification and the "challenging" parts. I'm guessing here, but I don't think they'd like any program with the challenging part. I wonder if they should have changed the "and" to "or."

But my first thought, that they were opposed to certain programs and not to critical thinking itself, still stands.

Well,

I see this as a warning to be careful what we take into our spiritual lives. That we must separate ourselves from the practices of old which condemned a prior creation and from which the "enemy" was the most exalted.

That world having been laid waste is being "remembered" for that prior judgment of times past. We are filled spiritually with Babylon and aligned with her idols. Her practices and ways being imposed on God's creation in an effort to corrupt still this world.

We have to forfeit her protection and be "birthed" from her a new people in God.


EDIT:
Babylon (or Babel) was the capital of an ancient empire. The name means "confusion" and originates from the confusion of languages which halted the building of the tower of Babel. Babylon being the place of the rebirth of ancient antediluvian schools of thought.


Symbolically, Babylon represents the confusion of idolatry and false religion.

Thank you very much. I don't like to start fighting until I know what's true. One old saying that sticks with me is "Nothing is ever as good or as bad as first reported."

You're right about the Schlafly letter. She must have been very frightened. I suppose many of our posters are scared, so they post out of fear or anger. That's one thing I like about this kind of communication. It gives me a chance to step back and ask, do I really want to send this?

Anyway, thanks again. I'm going to spend the day with a permanent blush.
