These are all great ideas and i defiantly need a scanner and a gas mask...the only down side to the mask is its size! The pack i have is medium size and i dont really want a larger one if i can help it.
Where can you get wind up battery chargers? they would be great. I have a small basic Nokia phone (dual sim) which for the money is fantastic and the battery lasts ages.

I consider myself a fairly logical thinker and lead a some what normal life here in the good old UK, I live in Yorkshire and have family in Birmingham (big city).
Over the last 6 months after really stumbling upon videos on youtube such as the 9/11 questions, the banking problems and terrorist cells still highly active i have wanted to focus on being ready for anything.
I am now learning the following things to make myself better able to look after myself in the UK when (not if) we take a turn for the worst.
I'm learning polish as i think it will be handy to know.
I'm already very mush a mixed martial artist with 5 pro cage fights under my belt, but fighting under rules in a cage where 99% of the time i'm fighting good people who i would always shake hands with after the fight i realize out in the streets of the UK in WROL places ill have to have fast and maybe lethal attacks to keep me and those around me safe. I'm looking at Krav Maga as a training style as it is very dynamic and has weapon drills too.
Also i'm building a a really well thought out urban/outdoor survival pack, this is still a work in progress but i'm pleased so far.
I'm building a new routine when i work out to get my cardio and grip strength and stamina to new levels using the climbing frame at the gym (hanging off bars and ropes etc).
Id love some advice from people who have any ideas on things i should research or learn in order to "be a more effective survivor" post SHTF
