As an ametuer astronomer these nights make me happy. Great viewing experiences are hard to come by with the city lights these days but if you happen to have a chance to view this I highly recomend it. I will have my telescope out every clear night we get for a while now. So get outside, look up, and enjoy.

www.space.com...

A trio of planets and the crescent moon are poised to put on a dazzling pre-dawn sky show on Sunday (July 15), but if cloudy weather blocks your view, don't fret. You'll be able to watch the celestial sight online, too.

The moon and Jupiter will also put on a separate celestial show early Sunday, as Jupiter appears to slip behind the moon, as viewed from Earth. During the Slooh webcast, Jupiter's icy moon Europa and volcanic moon Io should be visible as they orbit the planet.

The bright star Aldebaran will also be visible with Jupiter and Venus, and should appear to the lower right of the moon on Sunday morning.

Hopefully it won't be too cloudy here and I'll be able to sky gaze. Lately, all it has been, is rain. Which is good because we need moisture and cool air to take away all this heat. Thanks for the heads up.

Yesssss, I saw them last night. So thats what they were!!! This was after the sun went down and it was just dark enough. The crescent moon was in center, a good sized ""star" was above left and a HUUUUGE big bright one was below left of moon. Was the big bright one Veus? If so, I swore that thing was closer than I have ever seen it in my life...I was not using telescope, and it was SPECTACULAR!

I wish we could have some rain here. We are in serious trouble here with the crops. Maybe some Auroras will bring us some luck and some much needed rain.

Do not have a camera and my cheap TracFone would have been terrible for a night shot (have tried shots before of night things). I wiiiiissshhhhh I had a good video camera. It was so big bright and beautiful.the night was clear. I am in Northern Cali in the foothills. Plenty of nice stars to see out here away from the city.

I'll let you slide this time.

Go to the pawn shop and invest in one.

Just because you buy one for cheap at the pawn store, doesn't mean it's broke.
Or ebay, or craigslist.

If only the rain and clouds would let up here in the UK for me to see this..
I won't hold my breath.
Mate,I wish we in the UK could swap weather for a couple of weeks with the USA,it would help your crops and our mood.

I saw this on the way into work this morning and it is "spactacular".

I know it is a day ahead of your schedule but the rural sky got real clear after the rain we had last night.

When i saw the title of your post, I thought I had missed something. I saw Jupiter, Venus, and the moon.

This is two planets and the moon. Where you counting the hill tops I can see as the third planet ??

I don't think the stars [ lost their names] nor Jupiter's moon would count in your title.

I know -- picky --- picky --- picky

You know, I took it straight from the article title but I was wondering the same thing. Why they claimed three planets and not just the two. I will have to check my charts to see what other planets are visible at the time. I believe Saturn has set by then but I will have to check.

They might be referring to Uranus as the third planet though it can be difficult to see. It should be out about the same time though.
