Hypersonic flight is different from sustained hypersonic flight. Sustained hypersonic flight is much more difficult, because you're subjecting the vehicle to higher sustained temperatures, and stresses that a short hypersonic flight doesn't subject it to.

Certainly an interesting idea, one that I have considered to myself on multiply occasions. Technology continues to further the human race, and with this sort of power they are closely mimicking God, so to speak, maybe that's the whole point in it.
