ACTA IS BACK: Leaked docs show Canada/European Commission trying to sneak ACTA into Canada & back into Europe

boingboing.net

Last week, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to reject ACTA, striking a major blow to the hopes of supporters who envisioned a landmark agreement that would set a new standard for intellectual property rights enforcement. The European Commission, which negotiates trade deals such as ACTA on behalf of the European Union, has vowed to revive the badly damaged agreement. Its most high-profile move has been to ask the European Court of Justice to rule on ACTA's compatibility with fundamental European freedoms with the hope that a favourable ruling could allow the European Parliament to

Well well isn't that not surprising at all.

According to the Article we plan on using a treaty named CETA to sneak it back in.

The Canadian government is almost certain to go along with this -- a more textbook example of corporate lickspittles you will never find. It's up to Europeans to save Europe from its bureaucrats and Canada from its politicians.

Sadly they are right.

Thoughts?

This was going to happen sooner or later. In 2009 I had a teacher who received the Governor General's Award for teaching in Canada so she's fairly sane I'd say, comment that the Internet now is as free as it will ever be. It will only become more censored as profit becomes entangled with the word.

CETA is bull# and needs to be defeated. It totally redefines, and by that I mean diminishes province individual rights, as if the ACTA crap wasn't enough.

IMO if they had it their way they would dismantle the public internet and create a business only "Intranet" along with the government/military uses.

Our greatest weapon is the internet. They want us to not have that.

You're right. Yet, the Internet is not a weapon. Just as the pen was mightier than the sword so too has the Internet become the new pen and paper.

That old saying was based around the pen being better than any weapon. As long as we can keep the free flow of information on the internet intact we'll be ok.

Who is they?

I still think we are still quite a ways from an Orwellian Future. However, i would argue that a persistant goal of every political body is further regulation of the populus, not business.

Currently the internet is a medium that promotoes freedom, unfortunately as mentioned above, i fear this can be a tool to oppress as well.

They=Canada/European Commission

I realize that the Canadian/European governments were named, but come on this is conspiracy forum, who is theeeyyyy?? wink wink.

This trend of regulation of social media is not isolated, you can go around the world a find examples of this. Some further along then others, such as China, North Korea etc etc.

So who truly wants a international censorship blanket cast about the planet? If you were attempting to conglomerate a large portion of the world, strict regulation and limited personal freedom is crucial for an effective transition
