Gamble of giving tax dollars to businesses doesn't pay off in jobs

Companies such as MetLife in Tampa, Piper Aircraft in Vero Beach and Redpine Healthcare Technologies in the Panhandle have even missed their job-creation marks and made no moves to return the grants they’ve received.

A three-month investigation by The Tampa Tribune shows at least four in every 10 companies that won grants from the fund through the end of the state’s 2011 fiscal year have failed to meet their obligations — some slightly, others by wide margins.

Just another example of the government giving big business money and they fail to follow their obligations. Is anyone really surprised any more? Do you think there will be any repercussions?

Just plain poor oversight. A common problem with all government grants.
But seeing that it isn't their money, I don't really think they are losing any sleep over the taxpayers money they have foolishly invested.

From a business perspective, they really should have turned down the money up front. The fact is that the job market has been so unstable recently because our economy has been so unstable because of uncertainty. With laws and mandates up for judicial review in a number of states, most notably the anti-illegal immigration laws in many southern states, it's hard to hire people not knowing if you are going to have to spend thousands to make sure they are legal even though there is a challenge to the law as it currently stands. If the justice department looses their case, then you may get caught with your pants down if you hire but since there is a block on implementation, you don't have the tools in place to make sure that you are in compliance just in case.

This was a case of poor oversight as the politicians tried to make things look good for them by throwing money at businesses instead of examining the laws that they have passed and assessing the economic impact they have on the current environment.
