Who cares more about the internet? Republicans or Democrats?

I know the democrats try to censor right wing media but because they have a monopoly in hollywood, movies, and Television, they don't generally try to censor their own stuff. The internet is part of that whole culture as the top CEOS in the startup/technology world are Liberal Democrats. Including: Bill Gates, Tim Cook, Zuckerberg, Musk etc... I don't think Steve Jobs had a political affiliation, he might have been a conservative democrat...

A Republican from Texas by the name of Lamar S. Smith started SOPA.

The internet is the one place where republicans and democrats work together, mostly because they do not understand it at all! However, the democrats understand the ideas behind the technology the most. Ironically that's just the way it is. It is one of the most confusing things when it comes to US political madness. You would think Republicans want freedom on the internet.

There have been cases where both republicans and democrats have worked together, and betrayed their own parties to do some type of censorship on the internet. Or vice versa.

Republicans want to give more power to the tech companies and cable companies but some of those companies restrict access to top speeds and censor certain websites. The government in this case wants the internet to be free and open. But Democrats are working on a global security system for the internet so that they can track people online. They both want the internet to be different things and there is probably nothing stopping them from shaping the web into whatever it is they work out.

Politics should just stay out of technology altogether, but something tells me that this will never happen.

I propose a third option:

JULIAN ASSANGE.

The internet poses a thread to both parties, considering they are exactly the same other than on paper.

So, both parties want the internet regulated, non-anonymous and hopefully dismantled for public use unless you are a corporation playing ball.

All you need to know is that both parties want to curtail your rights and freedoms. Neither one of them want you to be able to post online without giving out your name, address, and copious amounts of other information. They both want to track you, know exactly what you are doing, who you are talking to, what you are talking about, and what color underwear you have on.

Neither has your best interest in mind. Neither cares about you. Neither cares about the country, or freedom, or prosperity (other than theirs) or happiness. Do yourself, and the country, a favor and get out from under the oppressive mind destroying machine called partisanship.

I agree on the your first two points but disagree on the last. They don't want it dismantled. They want to turn it into an even better tool for spying on the public than it already is.

Their corporate masters care more about the internet. They see the internet as a huge sum of money for themselves, so of course they seek to control it. After all, we wouldn't have things like RIAA trying to spy on everybody's ISP to prevent piracy now would they? It's all about greed and power, and that means forcing people to pay the prices they set so they can get richer and richer.

The fact that some (we) use it to discuss these things is what makes it a threat to them. Some elected officials are obviously purchased by big corporate entities and players and they don't want us to even discuss the idea of a false left/right paradigm. That's their biggest advantage. That we sleep and argue amongst ourselves while they legislate and create more wealth for those who purchased their position.

The internet is for the most part, unregulated global communication and this poses a significant threat to those who do not wish to let go of the reigns.

Look what happened in Egypt. Multiply that by 1000. It's not only possible, but likely some day.

The fairness act requires that stations air both sides of issues. Which means that the act actually helps prevents censorship. More often than not you only hear one side of issues today due to the stations wanting to suppress views the corporate owners don't agree with. The act would increase conservative commentators on liberal leaning stations and increase liberal commentators on conservative leaning stations.

Now of course the commentators are screaming censorship due to not wanting the public to hear both sides of the stories. An educated public is a dangerous public to those in power.

Now on the internet censorship. Both sides seem more than happy to censor when it comes to social issues. We have seen enough of the "think of the children/protect the children" crusades to turn the internet into a G rated babysitter.

It isn't really about the Government trying to control the internet because of vast sums of money. But you are correct that it is constantly being proposed because of money and power. Most of the issues that stem from the internet stem from the fact that our copyright and patent law is so disgustingly twisted and distorted and it was just not noticed by the public until the arrival of the internet which changed the way in which entertainment could be shared. Copyright and patent law was never intended to be something that ensured that IP stayed in control of the creator their family or media conglomerate for all eternity. It was intended to be set up in a way that the idea was protected for a period of time so that the originator could profit off of it before anyone else could make profit off derivative work from it.

Internet suppression is about the media lobbies trying to save their income and little more. Thank Disney for being one of the loudest voices in successfully lobbying to mangle copyright law when the next internet suppression law gets proposed.

This may be one of the more intelligent post this OP has ever made...and he is right. Both Parties are more than happy to censor the internet.

The part the OP fails to mention is how this is par for the course. This is exactly what is meant when people like myself say, there is no difference between the two parties.

When it comes to spending the Country into oblivion- BOTH Parties agree.

When it comes to stripping our civil liberties- BOTH parties agree.

When it comes to taxing us to our graves- BOTH parties agree.

When it comes to ALL the issues that effect every single person in this Country- BOTH Parties agree and your interest does not matter.

So what makes the Parties different? Social issues. Issues that truly do not matter. Issues lie abortion- which do not matter. If I choose to get an abortion today, it will not effect you. You may not like it, but it will not effect you. Not like an issue like taxes would. They disagree with issues like gay marriage, which again is a meaningless issue. If some gay couple gets married tomorrow, I will not lose any sleep. It will not effect me at all... not like the NDAA will.

This is what the parties count on. While we continue to argue about meaningless issues- we miss the big picture and we fail to see just how badly we are being screwed collectively as a whole on the real issues that we all have in common. Internet censorship is just one of those issues. We all have it in common, no one wants it, we all disagree- but our elected Officials will do whatever they want and to hell with what you think about it.
