So I was talking to a couple of my nephews (15&17 yrs old) this weekend and began chatting about the 2012 end of days thing and what they thought of it. They said they didn't know what to believe but that it would be "cool" if pandemonium happened and every man for himself would apply. I told them "First off, I don't believe that the world ends this year, and secondly No... it would not be cool..." lol, then began to explain and give them some examples of why SHTF would not be a fun thing.

I got to thinking and recalling that even people on ATS have the same idea as my nephews, who in my opinion, are too young and dumb to know any better. But some people should know better, I think that some people actually want a global event to shake us back to ground zero, they actually hope and wish for it. They think it'd bring some excitement to their mundane lives, but I think that they're wrong and that they should be praying and wishing that things stay mainly the same.

This thread is to list or give examples of why SHTF is a bad thing, and to illustrate why people should WANT the opposite.

Be it by nuke war disaster, solar flare destruction, asteroid apocalypse, mayan aliens invading, or whatever you want. SHTF would cause mass panic, and mass panic leads to mass chaos.

These are the points I gave my nephews if a global disaster would ensue, these points apply to us because we live in a big city, may not apply to smaller cities or rural areas...
- First - an event would happen and mass death would occur, those deaths might actually be the lucky people.
Thereafter.....
- Hospitals would fill up
- There would be a water/food shortage.
- People would riot and raid stores for all of the food.
- People would kill each other over living supplies
- Desperate people would attempt to invade your homes for supplies
- Electric power might not be available, no fridge, a/c, no tv, no internet, etc
- Disaster might make our tap water toxic and living conditions would plummet.
- When you ran out of food to feed your family, what would you do? Go hunting in the city?
- Gas for your vehicle would probably run out, would you walk everywhere? Bike?

We went on to talk about if police would still be willing to do their jobs, doctors, politicians. Would money become obsolete? If there was mass global death, who would pick up all the bodies? How would we stop disease?

The conversation kept going and going and they agreed that it's much better to hope that things stay as they are. What's better than waking up to a blue sky, going to work, having seemingly never ending supply of food supply, water, going home and sitting on your couch with your family.

If you wish to add to SHTF scenarios and why things would go terribly sour, please do so. Show the world why true disaster isn't a video game one should desire to play

Yes it will suck but the status quo can't continue. We have to bite on through to the other side.

I think that's why its SHTF and no "roses hitting the fan"

(Although there could be issues with stray thorns in the latter case)

In any regard, no need to worry about the end of the year. Unless you are planning on making a resolution to go back to the gym, then you have major issues.

People should probably be reminded that SHTF scenarios happen everyday just not in your country. So while you (not specific to anyone) are being a spoiled underserving idiot worrying about losing your ps3 and all the amenities you've come to love, under the impression that the power going out is S hitting the fan.

...There are other people around the world that just had their Mother mutilated, or their fathers strung up and executed, or a military strike take out all their loved ones.

But yes, tell us again how the S is hitting the fan and you won't get your daily internet. My heart weeps.

Oddly enough I was thinking that over the last few days. I'm a prepper (not an extreme prepper, but still) but I rather not have the world go to the wolves. I'm suffering through 100+ heat and power outages and I realized that, if SHTF then I wouldn't have fans or my well working or, heck, even just doing things around the farm things become that much more difficult.

I know that the end of the world view has been glamourized by Hollywood with zombie movies and the like but how many people who want that type of life don't have what it takes to make it. I rather not be without my fans, cellphones and tv.

and just think about all these people living in high buildings....no elevators, no water, no place to grow a little bit of food and NO FLUSHING toilets. Can you imagine the diseases this will bring?

And this is why cities are not a good place to be when and if the shtf world wide.

Op I know your heart is in the right place. But things sometimes need to become very bad for people to wake up and stop being egoistic. Should I rather hope that everything stays the same and the downward spiral continues and people become more and more depressed and kill each other over nothing daily and suffer from no hope? People are feed up with waiting for a system that give everyone a fair deal and do not care anymore about other peoples fear since they do not have the energy to care anymore. Would you rather die quickly or have a longterm desease like cancer that kills you slowly? Do you pull of your bandaids quickly or do you do it slowly? What is worse longterm suffering or a big schock to the system and then release? The more people refuse to change the worse the force needed will be.

Even if nothing unnormal supernatural happens on that day then there still will be things happening. If nothing happens then the ones with no hope will stil make a move out of despair. And we all know that the system that is built up is to blame for this situation. You want everything to be harmonious then the system needs to be fixed.

The system is creating bad karma and when I becomes to much it is gonna explode like gunpowder if you do not fix it. Cause and effect.

You probably scared those kids LOL....The ONLY thing Ive seen written in the stones about what will happen, is The Return of the 9 Gods. Obviously the "white god" with the white beard came and taught those indians advanced knowledge and probably how to make and read the calendar. They attributed their knowledge to this guy(s).....thats just my opinion. Anything else is from people like Jenkins speculating knowledgeable speculations.........

I notice that nobody has mentioned ther numerous Nuclear Power plants that would be abandoned and eventually melt down leaving the entire northern hemishphere uninhabitable. It would be nice to see mankind get a good swift kick in the butt but not a total collapse. Us country folk could get along just fine without our current societies comforts. It's those who wish to take who become the problem.
