They don't seem to be wanting or trying to hide this. If the media doesn't pick up on something, it's usually because they don't think it'll sell. Geological activity is sort of like a baseball game. A big game in the US gets attention. A big game in Tokyo may or may not get a 2 second popup on CNN's news ticker.
