putting a 2 cylindar engine into a Ferarri. (woe woe woe)

My friend got a pc.
Desktop. Toshiba. 4gb ram, 2.4 Ghz processor, quad core, 1Tb hdd

and it has an integrated Intel R HD family graphics pos graphics card. Can't play any games newer than 08.

TF2 is fine, san andreas is fine, battlefront 2 is fine,

we're wracking our minds to get fallout 3 to play. Did the d3d9.dll fix, fixed the ini file with the necessary changes, set everything to low.

One thing he can't access is the properties to his graphics card. It just will not open and we tried every trick in the book. I think if he could access that, he could set it to low all around and play it. Or something. We're at wits end. We saw SO many vids on youtube and on sites via the web where people have played Fallout 3 with the same stupid graphics card.

Any ideas????

Since it's a desktop PC, if push comes to shove, it would probably be easier to buy a real graphics card and install it into one of the PCIe slots. Then you can play most anything, depending on what graphics card you buy.

Is it difficult to install a new graphics card? The pc is brand spanking new so it should have the slot. I have installed ram so I know how to do that concept. Or should he take it somewhere and have them install it?

Basically, the card will slide right into the slot, kinda like RAM slides into their slots. You will likely need a Phillips screw driver to remove a screw and rear slot cover, and the screw will go into the bracket of the video card when it's installed. Very simple.

When you say it won't play Fallout are you saying it won't load it period or it comes up but you can't do anything?

The game starts, goes past 'please wait' and gets to the menu to start and instant CTD every time.

For Fallout 3 you need a DirectX 10 compatible graphics card.

Your system specs aint all that bad to be honest. Just get a older model graphics card (still good but slightly cheaper then the latest stuff) and you should be fine.

AMD sells some good ones.

Try right clicking Fallouts desktop icon on your mouse and select "Run as Administrator" .
See if that does it.

A CTD may not necessarily mean that it's graphics-related. Are you getting any errors? Make sure Windows and Direct X are up to date.

Most games install Direct X anyways, but you may want to run DXDiag by going to your Start Menu, clicking on Run, then type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes) and go to the "Display" tab and make sure it says "no problems".


Windows update may find newer drivers for the onboard graphics which may allow you to be able to play.

he's got dx11 and windows is definitely up to date. :/ Also is running as admin too. It's the Steam version if that helps some.

Every try online I could find so far we have tried. I think if it can get to the start game menu, it SHOULD play. That's what's getting me. It's beyond confusing. xD And irksome, really.

You said you tried everything. I found this. It's a ram booster that allows you to use all 4 gb of ram when fallout 3 originally only uses 2 gb. Maybe this will give you the boost to play it?

Im familiar with modding but he is not. Ergo, we have not installed fomm/fose yet. Does this require that to be installed? If not, where would it go?

you can have a later version of DX installed since it's backwards compatible with older versions.

But if your video card doesn't support DX11, it won't run on DX11 but the latest compatible version.

(btw i meant 11 when i said 10 )

There is no graphic card settings because there is no physical graphics card, its integrated graphics.

I remember having issues too when i bought Fallout 3 for pc. A few things i had to do to get it up and running: Update games for windows live and change my windows theme to basic. For some reason it wasnt launching on the Aero Theme, so i had to change to basic and the game launched for me.

He does not have DX11 you can only utilize DX11 with a DX11 graphics card. Windows 7 automatically comes with DX11 but that does not mean you are using it. As for the intel graphics options not opening up you should uninstall the drivers and reinstall them. Google can teach you its easy, just search uninstall intel graphics drivers and install intel graphics drivers.

Over all I think you should get a new graphics card. Intel graphics are not that grate and are really not meant for gaming. They may advertize it but they just want to get money. Sure it can GTA SA ect... but its probably really hard on it. A graphics card is really easy to install. You can get one used for $40-$100 that will play any game on the market. My recommendations are 9600gt 9800gt GT450, just look on cragslist. ALL WAYS TEST BEFORE YOU BUY USED!! But before you buy check how many watts your power supply is. You can do this by opening up your case and looking at the power supply sticker. Make sure your power supply meats the minimum power requiered to run the graphics card you chose.

If you want a really beefy card that will run all games in high settings then you will probably need to upgrade your power supply because most generic computers do not come with beefy power supply.

Your not going to be able to run fallout on that computer. It cant handle it changing the intel graphic options would do nothing because you have all ready set the games graphics to lowest settings. You need to get a graphics card. If you need help fell free to message me.
