An now it begins:
I'm not surprised at the Obama team but I am surprised at www.Godaddy.com for caving in so quickly.
If you have your hosting through godaddy you may want to dump them before they dump you.

They only gave Link 48 hours to find another host.

A political website that contained stinging criticism of the Obama administration and its handling of the Fast and Furious scandal was ordered to be shut down by the Obama campaign’s ‘Truth Team’, according to private investigator Douglas Hagmann, who was told by ISP GoDaddy his site contained information that was “maliciously harmful to individuals in the government.”

Here is a copy of the letter Doug Hagmann received from Godaddy.com

Dear Sir or Madam,
Our records indicate that you are responsible for the HOMELANDSECURITYUS.COM domain name and its hosted content. We have received complaints about your domain name and the contents of your website. Upon reviewing the situation, we have found that they are in violation on section 7 of your Domain Registration Agreement. (www.godaddy.com...) We understand that this can be a very sensitive topic, and that there will likely be a difference of opinion as to the nature of the complaints. We are not making a determination in favor of either, but do not wish to be involved in such disputes. As a result, we ask that you move the registration and hosting for these sites to another provider (Not affiliated with GoDaddy.com or our Reseller division, WildWestDomains.com). If you can initiate this move within 48 hours of the transmission of this notice, there will not need to be any downtime for your site. If the transfer is not initiated by this time, we may have to suspend services to your website. We strongly recommend you reply to this message as to your intentions.

This will further help insure that no unnecessary downtime results for your site.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Please be aware that this decision is final, and we do not wish to debate the actual content of your site.

Regards,

Godaddy doesn't have a problem using a woman as a sex object in there advertizing.

I bet their compliance looses more customers then letting the site stay.

Yeah well what did this guy expect.

The first words from “Rosebud’s” mouth were various expletives strung together in an interestingly creative tirade. Based on the uncharacteristically profane welcome that I thought was directed at me, it was quite obvious that my source was very angry.

“Do you know that the ‘[expletive deleted]-storm’ is still going on because of all the attention to your article?” Thinking that the “bloom was off the rose” and I was about to lose a valuable source, I began to remind my source that we agreed on what could be printed and spoken publicly, and he seemed to have previously come to terms with the initial blow-back created after the initial information he had given me made the rounds. My explanation was interrupted by his sudden laughter, a welcome relief from the tension I initially felt.

“Don’t worry my friend, it’s all good. I just didn’t think the information would have such staying power. We did the right thing by getting this stuff out there, and I’m convinced of that,” he stated. “We hit a nerve, and a big one,” he added, allowing me to relax a bit and feel better about his use of the words ‘we’ and ‘our.’

“I should have told you this before. Having the information first published in Canada was brilliant. It added a layer of inconvenience beyond their [DHS] containment and control, and they [Canada Free Press] did a great job with exposure. Make sure you tell them that. But the pressure is still on to find out where the leaks are coming from, so we’ve got to change a few operational things. But you’ve got to keep getting the word out while I take care of some things on my end,” my source instructed.

The first order of business was to establish a different communications protocol, followed by some information my source wanted to make certain I had correctly or to reemphasize. “We’re going to hit some more and even bigger nerves in due time, so just be ready” he added. Ready for what, I wondered.

He's leaking information that people don't want leaked.
If I was him I'd be careful. He's gonna end up in a nasty car accident if he's not careful.

And where is the proof that Obama or anyone associated with him demanded GoDaddy to do this???

Is your only source the owner of the website???

If this proves true.....

Someone please explain under what legal authority Obama's CAMPAIGN has in ordering a domain service to shut down one its websites?

Under what authority does ANYONE in the government have the power to order any PRIVATE business to shut down without due process?

How can one report on "morally objectionable" activites by political authorities around the world without referencing those activities?

One of the issues Hagmann reported on was a situation in China where a woman who could not pay a large fine for having a second child in contravention of China's "one child" policy was forced to undergo an abortion in the 7th month of pregnancy. Hagmann's site linked (with appropriate warnings) to a Chinese language site which carried the original story including a photo of the mother in bed with the aborted fetus posed beside her.

That whole scenario, start to finish, tells you a lot about life in China. It is "morally objectionable". It is unbelievable.

There is only one way to get people to believe it. It must be shown in lurid detail. Hagmann did so in an appropriate manner. He warned people about graphic detail and, simply told the story in a non sensational manner.

I've heard presentations of Hagmann's before. He is a little too right wing for me, but if he is being muscled around on the internet, people should be alarmed about it. Thanks to the OP for posting.

If you're so concerned you are being lied to call them yourself. Why don't you prove to be more than a "random opinion"? Chump

Ben Butler, Network Abuse Director at Go Daddy

We did receive complaints about objectionable content on Homelandsecurityus.com, but it was not from a government agency or campaign committee, nor was it political in nature.

As you may already know, we investigate all serious complaints about content reported to violate our terms of service. In this case, we substantiated the complaints and found several examples of content that appeared to violate our Terms of Service.

We don’t speak to specifics due to customer privacy concerns. We can tell you our terms of service prohibit content or activities designed to defame, embarrass, harm, abuse, threaten, slander or harass third-parties. We also don’t allow content to encourage unlawful activities by others, such as hate crimes, terrorism and child pornography. Our terms also prohibit activities that are tortious, vulgar, obscene, invasion of the privacy of a third-party, racially or ethically.

For a complete look at our terms of service, you can visit [here].

It would not be a violation of our terms to disagree with a person or organization’s politics.”

Actually, the OP did not make the claim. It was made by the man who owns the website. Also, I first saw the story on infowars.com. Say what you like about Alex, but he does cover solid news items from time-to-time. It does however sound like something a progressive would attempt.

Godaddy have just lost me as a customer. I have been a customer for the last 5 years and I have 4 websites and 80+ domains with them, plus various other services. The BS tone of that email has made me angry and I don't want to be associated with a host who doesn't defend their customers. They say they are not taking any sides in regards to the complaint but clearly they are if they're obeying the request of the Obama team.

Shame on GoDaddy. They are spineless and cowardly. They don't care about their customers rights, nor do they care about their privacy either as Godaddy supported one of them government acts designed to limit online privacy.

I am going in search of a host defends privacy and freedoms, a host that doesn't communicate with censorship requests. Ideally, it'll be in Iran or Russia. Anyone have an suggestions???

Also, how much would it cost to set up my own in-house hosting service that can handle spikes in traffic? (Just for myself only)

From this persons site:

I repeated my initial questions, and although he refused to provide any specific details, eventually gave me some clues without breaking ranks from his company policies on not telling their customers anything. The clues pointed to Obama’s “truth teams.”

If he is such a bearer of "truth" why not explain what those "clues" were? He is connecting dots because he wants to connect dots -- not because the evidence is there. While his valid appeal to the situation is understandable and "morally objectionable" is very vague, I just don't see how this is connected to President Obama or his "Truth Teams".

Shame on GoDaddy. They are spineless and cowardly. They don't care about their customers rights...
Their customers' rights are those that those customers agreed to in the Terms of Service Agreement. Break those and GoDaddy has every right to terminate their contract with you.

I think you are going about it the right way, if you disagree with the service you are receiving. I also agree that the agreement between say you and the provider should place all content and the legal ramifications squarely upon your shoulders. From the looks of the contract, it seems GoDaddy retains some of that responsibility; but after all said and done, people agree to it.

Overall the gentleman's claims are very vague and only connect "Obama Truth Teams" by saying "the clues point to it" or something similar to that.

It's a cease and desist letter. It has no legal weight behind it on it's own, it's merely a threat of legal action. Usually they're used by entertainment companies because of copyright infringement but in this case it's about "libel".

Thing is that C&D letters are usually made when the complainant either has no legal basis or cannot afford legal action. They're worded with sufficient legaleze so that either the site owner or the domain owner will get scared and call it off.

So you don't actually need to have a workable case, just sound threatening enough with your letter and people will usually cave in. Personally I hope he finds a better method of getting this information out, there are a few ways to do that.

And an edit here for the post above mine: Godaddy has no clue whether what this guy is doing is legal or not, or against their T&C or not and doesn't care, all they care about is keeping their nose clean.

My post had nothing to do with legality except that it would be perfectly legal for GoDaddy to claim the site owner broke the T&C contract.

If they had no basis nor proof the person broke the T&C, than the site owner would have had enough ammunition for a civil suit for breach of contract.
