A submarine, which is thought to be Canadian, has radioed for assistance. A large rescue effort is currently underway off the west coast of Ireland.
The boat is not thought to be nuclear powered or armed.

A major rescue effort has been launched off the west coast of Ireland after a submarine, believed to be Canadian, radioed for assistance.
A Royal Air Force Nimrod has been diverted to the area and a search and rescue helicopter from the Royal Navy base in Ayrshire is on its way.

If it turns out to be a Canadian military submarine, it could be one of the
Victoria class of diesel powered submarines which were purchased
from the UK.
