The quote "Those who would give up their liberty for the sake of security deserve neither" is just as applicable today as it was then, it is applicable to any society at any time. Back then they had Indian raids, did they not? As well as coastal raids by pirates etc.

Societies usually have more to fear from their own leaders than they do external threats. Most of the mass killings of the 20th century were by governments perpetrated on their own citizens, like over 20 million in Russia, over 30 million in China, over 2 million in Cambodia, over 1 million in Rwanda and in the 21st century over 50 million in the US - oops I'm getting ahead of myself.
