New Laws Target Wikileaks

The Labor Government is tightening up Australian law in areas that will have a direct impact on organisations such as WikiLeaks. Only the Greens are challenging the new bills in parliament, and they are receiving scant media attention. There’s a new extradition law that will make it easier for foreign governments to request extradition of Australians and a new spying law that broadens ASIO’s reach, which has been dubbed the WikiLeaks Amendment.

And finally there’s a bill that will make it easier to retain digital data for Australians, and easier also to pass that information to overseas law enforcement agencies. Senator Scott Ludlam, the Greens’ spokesperson for communications, told New Matilda that the Attorney-General wants all digital records for all people for all time to be trapped and recorded so that intelligence agencies, law enforcement agencies, and welfare agencies can mine the data. The new extradition law contains elements that make it easier for foreign governments to request that people be extradited from Australia.

The new federal law also enables people to be prosecuted in Australia for alleged crimes overseas. The law was foreshadowed in November last year by Jeffrey Bleich, the US Ambassador to Australia, who told reporter Anne Davies of the Sydney Morning Herald when she asked him about WikiLeaks that, "We will have to see whether there is an offence against any person, and Australia will have to evaluate its own extradition obligations." The new law passed last month.

Looks like these laws are being passed without public knowledge in order to easily stop organizations like Wikileaks from operating legally. The laws include easier extradition of Australians to other nations, new spy laws broadening Asio's reach, and a new bill making it easier to retain digital data on Australians and pass it on to foreign hands(also through ISP traffic). This truly disgusts and shows how little our government values its citizens by allowing foreign nations to steal our rights, and what perfect timing for those snakes than now with Assange's final UK court decision approaching.

I have been waiting for this.

And people have the nerve to bag China

The American Government is out of control. Gillard is obviously in their pocket.

Pretty scary stuff.

Why's it a hard concept to understand that what they (and the whistleblowers) are doing should not only be legal but encouraged?

When people learn whata whistle blower is and how it works get back to me.

Until then releasing hundreds of thousands of classified documents that show absolutely no wrongdoing / criminal activity is a crime.

Based on your arument you wold be ok supporting a group that say broke into cocacolas records and got the forumla and released it to the public?

What about medical records?
Your private financial records?

Where does it stop? When does "whistleblowing" become a crime?

Manning was not a whistleblower. That status ended the moment he decided to access documents that contained no criminal activity and releae them.

Wikileaks is not immune from proseuction for releasing those documents, nor are they immune by trying to label them as a news organization.. If you guys paid any attention at all to detail you would know that the journalists involved in the pentagon paper fiasco, a case the other side loves to quote but has absolutely no idea of what it states.

If they bothered to read they would have noticed the 2 journbalists were charged. During the begining of the legal proceedings the PA royally screwed up part of the evidence, which in turn resulted in the charges being dismissed. There was NO ruling that extended protection to the media from criminal prosecution.

The ruling was embarrassment to the government is not a good enough reason to invoke prior restraint.

Wikileaks is a sham...
Its used as Assanges own persnal bank account and this is obvious since every quarter he seems to pop back in the news with more outrageous claims, asks for donations, then never releases anything to the extent he claimed.

I wish you guys could see that....
