Why?
We have a perfectly fine working internet now.
If you do not want the world to know your schedule, what you eat, where you live, don't tell anyone on the internet.
I do not have a FB account as I do not consider myself important enough to tell the world what I had for lunch or that I checked in at the bar, my status is living!
I do nothing illegal therefore I have nothing to fear online or off.

Thats exactly what I WAS imagining and have done so for quite some time. I dont think it would be very hard to do. Secure calls may not be easy but how many of us really need high security when we call ?

As a bonus it would remove those nasty high output masts that mostly seem to be right next to primary schools, anybody notice that?

There are much better targets than me.

All of this talk of an underground INTERNET is great but people are forgetting one thing. If the TPTB want to stop the Internet they can for one simple reason. No mater what kind of Internet set you have or where it is you have to use wires or radio singles to access it which both can be monitored, traced and jammed. Dead drops would be the only real way and the drops would be disabled or destroyed as some as they were found. And encrypting your emails is a joke. All they have to do is fix it so any and all encrypted emails are just not allowed to go though. Remember you have to use their wires to send anything and all they have to do is cut those wires. They own the air waves so all they have to do is trace the signal and you are busted for using an illegal transmitter. If they really want to stop it there is lillte if anything we can do about it.

You know IRC has been around a long long time. All the facebook/twitter/ipod people have made it so that if you have to run a program and not a simple market app, like mIrc and then have to know where to connect, like effnet or undernet, for example, then it doesn't exist.

I remember using fservers on irc long before crap like napster was even a concept. Audiogalaxy was barely even known and icq was the funny little odd thing that whistled loon noises at you when someone wanted to speak to you.

Everyone is so busy with their heads in the 'new shiney internet' clouds that they cannot even see the ground it started from any more. If they ever did. Kids these days will never know about it. Instant ipad apps and twitter is all the internet is these days.

i like the idea of designing an ISP that takes your internet security and privacy seriously


with an encrypt to isp and end to end encryption AND packet tracking you will be hard pressed to have your privacy invaded

I agree with you, as if your not doing anything illegal who cares? You might be surprised. Most importantly certain totalitarian governments, China, Syria, many others need only need a name or data mined cause to target you as an "enemy of the state" to post anything and they gotcha. A name alone can be ominous to those afraid of free thinking, freedom loving, or aspiring people. One can know a police state by how much it fears its own people, much more how they crack down on them.

A nation that fears its own people know they only stick around, the nations PTB, only by fear. People love to gripe about the loss of American freedoms and they have every right to, they should bitch and moan. Since the God awful patriot act which the previous FISA court statutes would have dealt with and did adequately for decades, we now have many less freedoms notably privacy post 9/11

But we can still bitch and moan openly, as long as it doesn't lead to violence. Why the patriotic act IS a problem for Americans something that has a lot in common with the UK Official Secrets Act, or "D Notice" thats existed for decades. But like all things American we do it bigger, flashier and more expensively. But we are limited in one respect and honestly don't know if this applies to the Brits, Aussies, etc. Many people can exercise very brood powers under the patriot act, and this IS new.

In South Africa and a few other countries there are WUG's Wireless User Groups.. using standard wifi equipment the people have setup large networks that span km's that have a few thousand people connected. the networks are for the people by the people.. the currently stick to laws like no internet etc.. but in a situation where all the rules go out the window the network can be used for anything.

u got a lot to learn my friend. All the tyrannical dictatorships under which the citizens are crapping in their pants to say anything or do anything, to be killed by their own Gov, have initially been "free" the way most Americans think America is now. You probably live in a cave because if you would be paying attention they got drones watching us now, and their working on an interent kill switch, internet id's, they want to control what you look at and listen to, monsanto paying off Cronie sthta are working right next to the Potus, stuff is getting ILL out there and your on some "dont tell anyone on the internet". Ha!!! Google, facebook and ISPs are pretty much keeping records of the last 2-3 years, if not more, of everything you look at.

modern cellphones or any mobile device with a cellular antennae (and wifi and bluetooth) are quite capable if there is software developed to unleash their potential. As yet I am not aware of any software out there that allows a user to take complete control over the radio capabilities of smart phone antennaes. However, if someone could build/program a 'stack' as i think its called, that would give most smart phones limited or better capability to communicate INDEPENDENT of radio towers, satellite gps etc, forming a wide area network of such devices, with chat and other services enabled, such a program would be of amazing practical value in many emergency situations we can all imagine.

Right on, and hang on to that old Modem (they can be easily encrypted).

Remember the old days with CB radios? Sure they used to listen in, and so we developed the 10-codes.
Then they tried to triangulate on us, so we just boosted the power (everybody was running 100 watt or 1000 watt 'burners' LOL) and their sensitive tracking gear got swamped, they couldn't even find which street you were in. Then we started sneaking into their vans while they were eating donuts and photograph everything, and then tell everybody.
Then we went all sophisticated and started using sidebands, RTTY etc. It was a joke.

Just to let the younger members know how we did things in those days, don't ever let them grind you down

The problem with this is it's just a virtual network that is running on the existing physical network which we have no control over. When they turn off the internet Tor will turn off at the same time as with any other virtual encrypted network or VPN's. WiFi networks run by the people can not be shut down as easily. There are a bunch of benefits to having a "private" network which can't be switched off or regulated by TPTB..

That's not entirely true.
TOR makes use of millions of PC's in a P2P network, using any available line.
OK so all the main servers will be out, but you can connect via-via through telephone,yes Wifi also.
Anyone who still has a phone line can 'network' this way.
Not easy, but it can be done.

ETA: Nowadays of course, everything goes through a central server That's too bad...
