KFC has been ordered to pay eight million Australian dollars (£5.1 million) to the family of a Sydney girl left brain damaged after eating one of the fast food giant's chicken wraps.

Monika Samaan's family sued KFC, claiming the then-seven-year-old girl contracted salmonella poisoning from a KFC chicken wrap in 2005.

She was in a coma for months and left with brain damage.

So, this is a little bit of an older story (happened in 2005, article was written at the end of april) but i still thought it was interesting. I had no idea that getting a serious case of salmonella could leave you brain damaged! Scary! I never eat KFC anyways, but this could happen at any fast food/restaurant anywhere!

KFC is, of course, denying that they are at fault, and are appealing the judges decision. Can you imagine how horrible that would be? to have a young daughter turn from being a little girl into a vegetable just because of tainted food! What a terrible thing to happen, I hope the KFC's appeal gets denied so this family can at least try to make their daughters life tolerable after having such a sad thing happen to her!

your thoughts?!

Very sad story

Both of my kids love KFC but I absolutely hate it. Especially after I read so many stories that they tend to sell their chicken uncooked and the way the kill the chickens. I buy it for them maybe once or twice a year and it's scary to think that one time is all it may take to leave you permanently damaged like this girl.

Im glad that they sued and are getting some compensation, although no money can ever really bring her back.

Of course there's no way to be sure - its all just allegations and "he said" at this stage, but reading the 21 page thread at another left me with the impression that the family might not be telling the truth here.

The story goes that the KFC wrap was eaten 1/3 by the girl. It was then taken home, where the next 1/3 was cut into two peices and eaten by two more people. The last 1/3 was then eaten by a forth person.

And it was the only bad bit of food in the whole store, over that whole time period.

Most people think they ate something else, and are just blaming KFC for the $$$$ payout.

They don't quite describe the long term effects upon her, only to say brain damage. Well it seems a bit insulting, giving her all this dough, when she may no longer have the capacity to really enjoy it. Rather a shame.

If that were truly the case...then, your Mom's friend is a very rich person right now. Did they collect/sue for the supposed rat?

Lol the "Fried Rat somebody ate" is probably the oldest Fast Food Urban Legend out there. It was even used in movies like "The Wilies"
Don't believe everything you are being told

The story does seem weird, it doesn't make much sense as the poster above explained. I guess the family was just after the money and the brain damage came from something else. Wouldn't surprise me, so many people are money-hungry and do everything to get rich.

And i can't comment on KFC as i absolutely dislike Fast Food and i've never been in a KFC

Maybe her parents should be charged with a crime for feeding their daughter KFC. For $5 I can buy a package of raw chicken drumsticks and feed 3-4 people with them, so don't tell me KFC is a cheaper, better way to feed children. That's not food!
