houston needs to keep track of all torquing angles, it requires apollo 14 to read all angles back to houston for course corrections. houston knows the
last attitude of the craft and knows the location of all the stars..
and houston can adjust the IMU, houston will know where the IMU is pointing at all times this is the whole purpose of the PNGS and AGS systems, it
also knows what the platform is and whether it is valid or not, houston also knows exactly where the stars are.
now if houston knows the IMU, the platform, the star location.. what makes you think they cannot confirm if the computer is pointing at the correct
star or not?
they do regular IMU alignments for a reason.
