Welcome to ATS by the way.

I think you're on to something very important here.
My suspicion is that this com.pany is simply a government front.
They saw how badly the public reacted to the "killswitch" idea.

Markmonitor is a brand protection service.. and a registrar.. you may remove your tin foil hats.. do you people really not understand how this works?

Facebook, Google.. they retain their own DNS and they own their own domains .. lordy =) the paranoia is high these days

The registrant and admin contacts are the owners... the registrar is who the owner's pay for the registration of that name.. in this case .. it's Markmonitor which specializes in helping companies protect their brand names.. The DNS servers represent who has control over the domain name ( manages the dns records.. etc )

Thank you, I was just about to post this but I forced myself to scan the thread before doing so. Kudos to you for actually understanding this instead of jumping in the conspiracy wagon.

I can tell you from all my marketing classes and other experience that MarkMonitor isn't a big deal. These companies often rely on a company like this to keep track of their online properties. Sometimes there can be financial benefit, such as moving certain components overseas. Other times it's simply to hide new product announcements. Case in point: Apple does this all the time. They will have MarkMonitor register the domain on their behalf so that they won't be seen to leak upcoming product names. I think they did this with iPad.com, iPhone4.com, etc. Under basic trademark laws, Apple is required to register these domains or it might lose the rights to the trademark. They have to be seen protecting it. Furthermore, if they don't register them then some person or company can buy them and put porn or anything else on there that would make them look bad.

MarkMonitor is one of those services that does all this and more. It isn't called Mark for a mark of the beast or anything like that. A mark in advertising terms is a logo, word, ligature or anything else that is designed and associated/trademarked by a company for their identity. This company monitors their marks. Simple as that. They take care of all the regulatory b.s., upkeep of registration, etc that they need. Large companies often own hundreds if not thousands of domains. MarkMonitor tracks it all for them and makes sure everything is paid up and properly registered in hundreds of countries throughout the world. I think they might also make sure their trademarks, registrations, and everything else is maintained in all the different countries and kept up to code with all the changing local laws. Something like this is just cheaper for them to outsource because MarkMonitor has already done all the work in keeping up to date with all the changing regulations. They use MarkMonitor kind of like they might hire or retain an attorney. They specialize in a particular field of b.s. that these companies don't want to have to worry about—and I wouldn't be surprised if they shoulder a good deal of the liability if they do something wrong, protecting the larger corporation from screwups.

Could you pleas elaborate on these conclusions drawn?

1 - Every single request you make to any of these servers can be recorded by this "Mark Monitor" company, these requests include:
a - Every single message you send
b - Every single picture you see
c - Every single click you make on any link
d - Any kind of information you have shared by browser's default

Wrong, a DNS server simply points the domain name (ie. Facebook.com) to the IP address of the real server.

Since DNS requests are cached, every message you see, every picture you see, every click you make is not seen by the DNS server. It is queried once for the location of the server and that is it. One lookup per domain every time the DNS cache on the system is purged or pruned. For me, this is every time I bootup/shutdown, for others this could be weeks.

While there are worrying conclusions that can be drawn, ie. a whitelist DNS company is being made of "compliant" companies to allow if the internet was ever to be censored, the actual privacy ramifications are extremely negligible.

Too funny.

I hope you realize that your first video is from The Onion News Network.

If you are unfamiliar with them do a Google search, then read a few stories.

This happens often enough that I'm surprised the mods don't have the Onion blocked.
