Soca attack: Serious Organised Crime Agency site taken down

The website of the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) has been taken offline following a cyber attack.

Soca confirmed to the BBC that soca.gov.uk had suffered a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

I don't know the significance of this yet but thought it would be worthy of discussion. Who do we think is responsible for this latest attack?

SOCA are playing this down but it must be a big embarrassment for them getting shut down by the very people they are trying to stop. How ironic

It seems that these DDOS attacks are becoming more frequent. A step closer to an all out Cyber War?

Isn't a DDos attack just using a botnet to flood a website with traffic so noone can get in? If thats all it is then it wont be a security risk, just an annoyance to anyone visiting their site. Any attacker would probably need the site online to change or deface it in any way.

As for gathering sensitive data well your talking hacking there. Breaking into systems and such. The website will probably be of no concern to those wanting to steal secrets.

ETA: The attack could be used as a distraction while the attackers get down to the real task of alleviating the government of sensitive information.

The denial attack is at the front door!

While the plebs are trying to control that they are not at the back door!

Information goes out the back door!

Any attack of this type is generally to get info and info = power.

GOOD.

Soca has recently shut down 36 websites believed to be selling stolen credit card information.

I'd love to see the evidence, once again a .govsite biting off more than they can chew - it was probably one of the website that were shutdown for the credit card info.

Take em all down! Off with their corporate greed and power!
