Coll says ExxonMobil executives "see themselves — ExxonMobil — as an independent sovereign with their own foreign policy," he says. "Sometimes their interests ally with the United States government, sometimes they find themselves in opposition to the United States — and sometimes they try to stay out of the way."

The interview was extremely interesting.
Here we have a company that can influence foreign governments.
An even at times thwart the foreign policy of the USA.

However what amazes me is that these companies have so much power.
And they use that power to do things that are not in our best interest.
How is that not a national security issue? it boggles my mind.

The interview, that won't be up till 5pm, goes into what exxonmobil did in chad.

There was Exxon's meddling in a 2006 standoff between Idriss Déby, the authoritarian leader of Chad — a Central African country with rich oil reserves — and Paul Wolfowitz, then the leader of the World Bank. Déby wanted weapons to fight rebels supported by nearby Sudan, but good-governance clauses in loans Chad had received from the World Bank restricted the country's ability to purchase arms. Wolfowitz was ready to freeze some of Sudan's bank accounts, prompting Déby to threaten to effectively kick Exxon out of Chad. That could have cost the company billions of dollars. So Exxon lobbied the U.S. ambassador to Chad to fix the problem, which led to Déby getting his weapons and Exxon its oil.

freakin incredible. and we let them wield so much power it's stunning.

Sorry... was too busy waiting for the first person to d/Load the annon info leak.

Star and Flag.

The totalitarian tiptoe just turned into a sprint. Disgusting to say the least but not surprising one bit. Fascism at its finest.

Just throwing in a comment.

Corporation = Person = Sovereign and Country = Citizens = Sovereign then why does it actually seem that Corporation + Country - Citizens = Sovereign?

What do you expect, its the Rothschilds.

Wonder if anyone has ever put a price on any of these peoples heads.
I am looking forward to the day when the Rockefellers, Rothschilds, Morgans etc all have their faces plastered on the post office walls with the caption, "WANTED, Dead or Alive".

I would certainly join that posse when it is formed.

Not when the people get pissed and decide we are not going to take it anymore. We should just march right into their homes/businesses and take everything over and claim it on the behalf of the people. This is one case where I fully support vigilante justice.

But you are right, very unlikely to happen.

The largest oil company in the world is the government owned Saudi Aramco.

The oil majors, XOM being the largest, are actually a very small percentage of the total oil supply.

If you want to see the real power of oil, then look at how a backward nation of female genital mutilators has an undeclared nuclear weapons program(bought from Pakistan), the second most powerful Middle East army, and has the US president bow to their king.
