The problem in UK concerning water shortages is not so much due to lack of rain fall but mainly due to growing population and lack of investment.The population has out stripped water storage capacity.As I write the river Severn is 3M above normal levels in full flood and racing towards the sea,water for all.If only there was somewhere to put it.
There are also serious concerns regarding the national grid now running flat out and generally in poor condition with no major investment since it was built.
You can't find the taps in the dark!

building houses on and tarmac'ing floodplains hasn't helped either. nowhere to capture all the excess run-off is an issue that could be seriously considered. a minister mentioned standpipes next year for a worst case drought.

the main problem with the last sentence and also taking into account your mention of a power grid almost on it's knees is,,,,,, (consider extra loading on the grid due to hybrid rollout,more demand),,,,,,the vast majority of households rely on an energy efficient boiler to warm their home, wash bods and dishes on tap etc. if the water is reduced to standpipes, no boiler on demand direct hot water. if power grid buckles, no boiler on demand direct hot water or central heating. cannot remember the minister in question but they should realise the implications of a double whammyn and prepare everyone for this.

Well, it was inevitable that as soon as a hosepipe ban was imposed it would start to rain! It was also inevitable that as soon as it started to rain people would start to whine on about the need for a hosepipe ban.

Fact is that it takes time for reservoirs and the eater table to be replenished.

Hosepipe bans seem to happen every other year. No big deal. Overpopulation, poor water conservation and leaky pipes are all to blame, coupled with not enough rainfall.
