Ten minutes ago I was handed a form by my boss at work. Basically... it's a sign up form/contract for antidotes in the event of a terrorist attack. If something happens, my family and I will get antidote type supplies first... before they are distributed to the general public.

Here's how the doc begins:

COOK COUNTY SHERIFF'S EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT MEETING

FIRST RESPONDER, ESSENTIAL/CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PERSONNEL AND FAMILY PHARMACEUTICAL DISTRIBUTION LIST

Now... the sign-up is voluntary... but strongly suggested... for public employees... so, should I sign up? If I do, am I being unjust/getting special treatment?

If it was just my life at stake I wouldn't, out of a sense of fairness... but my family is also at stake. What would you guys do?

(also, who would have thought that I am part of an 'essential' post-apocalyptic infrastructure?)

I would sign up no matter the reasoning. you take care of your family at all costs and by any means necessary!

what type of work do you do, firefighter or police or something? is that how it reads "essential post-apocalyptic infrastructure" or is that just your interpretation?

In order to do your job you must be physically and mentally useful. Your not gonna do your job helping other people very well if you're constantly thinking about your family (so best to secure them first, then allow you to do your job with less stresses on your mind).

I don't know what you do for a living, but I will assume it's somewhat important. Keeping you alive (and your mind off your families well-being) will allow you to perform your job better, keeping people safer than if you were down for the count.

While there's a large part of me that says "@#$@ that, I want the antidotes first!", the better part recognizes that there are "essential" personel, and that these people need to be taken care of first. Essential doesn't mean popular, but necessary to the continued functioning of society: police, EMS, firefighters, administrators, etc. They do have a higher priority for "rescuing" than a computer tech
