he case has raised the possibility of a human pandemic should the H5N1 avian flu virus mutate or blend with the human flu virus to create a much more virulent strain.

At a Bangkok news conference yesterday, Thai health officials, flanked by representatives of the World Health Organisation and US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, sought to play down the significance of the development while emphasising an aggressive response.

Thailand was criticised this year for being slow to acknowledge the threat of bird flu.

"We have checked the genome sequence and there is no evidence of genetic change as yet," the director of epidemiology with the Thai Department of Disease Control, Dr Kamnuan Ungchoosak, said.

The health crisis centres on a 26-year-old mother, Pranee Thongchan, who died on September 20 after nursing her 11-year-old daughter, Sokutala Prepasse, when she was terminally ill. The daughter died, supposedly of dengue fever, on September 8 and was cremated. She is now thought to have died of avian flu.

This is the second wave of the H5N1 virus since last December. Just hope it doesn't get on any airplanes, boats etc. This flu needs to be contained and gotten rid off. I foresee everyone walking around with surgical masks and disinfectant at the doorways. This could get real bad!

Just a thought...has anyone considered these biological threats as the same ones mentioned in the Bible? Of course we're not going to see an Angel from Heaven casting down various plagues from Heaven...we're gonna see it on CNN and read about outbreaks in the media. Any thoughts?

To start we have the avian flu or bird flu, with outbreaks at the moment
in Asia. Usually transmitted by bird to bird, over recent years the
virus has mutated.

I think because of the mutations it must be an rna
disease. Anyhow in the last few years the disease has passed from bird
to human and last year in Asia there was the case of human to human
transmission. This came about by a young girl who looked after birds and
her aunt both coming down with the disease, then her mother who had no
contact with birds, but had been nursing the young girl and her sister,
contracted the disease.

There were five cases in Asia last year with five fatalities. The
problem will come when the avian flu, which is very similar to human flu
virus A strain, makes the final mutation.

All it will take is a person who contracts the avian flu who already has
influenza A strain in them. The two viruses will cross genes creating a
new super deadly strain of flu. A disease with the spreadability of
human flu and the fatalities of Avian Flu.

countries the world over are actually preparing for a pandemic of this new superflu strain.
