underground nuclear test for building

I did a search on ATS and could not find anything related so could someone tell me if maybe some of the underground nuclear detonations by the USA in the midwest were maybe covert construction techniques to create deep underground spaces for bases to be built? any thoughts or links someone could share would be most helpful....Thanks...
