Anybody here notice www.godlikeproductions.com is offline? It went offline earlier today shortly after someone posted that their friend was an insider at JPL and declared that Toutatis would indeed impact!

Note! This may not be the reason GLP went offline. This is only my opinion. There could have been other posts or threads that I did not read or it could be having technical difficulties.

Or, it could be that it is not true that Toutatis will impact, but per the Patriot Act, the website was taken down for excess acts of terrorism in the form of panicking people.

Any thoughts or news on this?

* exceeded bandwidth
* didn't pay their internet bill (this has happened before)
* smurfing attack
* hardware

In fact, a simple ping shows that the server isn't responding, so either they've blown a router or the computer did a nose dive. It locks up at ISCG, their host.

I doubt anyone would bother taking down GLP. They'd take US down before they went after GLP.

Don't know the real reason, and wasn't at glp when the jpl insider posted, but all day long there have been wild and crazier than the norm prognostications at glp about the end being nigh. It's a riot. Can't believe anyone takes what's put up there that seriously.

So what is a smurf attack?

Back when I worked for the airline, a Smurfing Attack was when we dumped a bucket of the blue water that goes into the toilets on airplanes, over someones head.

Turned them blue for 3-4 days

Smurf attack
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The smurf attack, named after its exploit program, is a denial-of-service attack which uses spoofed broadcast ping messages to flood a target system.

In such an attack, a perpetrator sends a large amount of ICMP echo (ping) traffic at IP broadcast addresses, all of it having a spoofed source address of a victim. If the routing device delivering traffic to those broadcast addresses performs the IP broadcast to layer 2 broadcast function, most hosts on that IP network will take the ICMP echo request and reply to it with an echo reply each, multiplying the traffic by the number of hosts responding. On a multi-access broadcast network, there could potentially be hundreds of machines to reply to each packet.

Several years ago, most IP networks could be thus used in smurf attacks -- in the lingo, they were "smurfable". Today, thanks largely to the ease with which a network can be made immune to this abuse, very few networks remain smurfable. [1] (www.netscan.org...)

To secure a network with a Cisco router from being used in a smurf attack, the router command no ip directed-broadcast will suffice.

This term should not be confused with an act of war waged by Smurf cartoon characters.

Unfortunatly, this is not the case, as Toutatis has no chance of Hitting the Earth. Elaine is simply doing repairs and minor upgrades to the board.

Panick over...For now.

Insider.
