My mac (G5) is showing its age,

I rate things through youtube, my G4 laptop is poop on youtube, stutter slow choppy. Well my mac processor g5 is starting to stutter and chop up on youtube, i'm thinking that flash adobe and all that software is breaking pass my puny computer power. the problem, i cannot buy a new computer, any suggestions

What does clicking on the APPLE. then "About this Mac" say?

You could run Linux.

It obviously won't be a Mac anymore if its running Linux but at least you'll be able to use your computer and it should run faster.

I believe there is an older version of Ubuntu that runs on G4 and G5 PPC CPUs.
And I know YellowDog Linux is made specifically for PPCs but its not very user-friendly.

It's partially Adobe Flash because there are no Flash updates for PPC Macs past 10.1.102.64, and Youtube going to HTML 5 to display video. 5 was supposed to eliminate problems displaying video across platforms, but that ain't happenin'...

What browser are you using? I would suggest TenFourFox, it's Firefox that has been optimized specifically for PPC prosessors. The caveat is they disable plug-ins because of the poor security with Adobe Flash and Java. There was a reason why Steve Jobs dumped those on new Mac products. You can restore plug-in operation with the about:config command in TenFouFox if you really need those. I would suggest the NoScript add-on for security if you do that. You can block sites from downloading Flash/Java scripts selectively.
The G5 PPC can do great video, that's why video game boxes still use PPC's as their processors.

You can also use Elmedia Player mac.eltima.com... to play vids that won't run in your browser very well. What it does is to download the vid, then play it from your memory, instead of while downloading. Vids run smooth.

I'm still using a G3, and I want to upgrade to a G5 2Ghz dual processor. I've got way to much software in the old OS9/classic and OSX PPC to start over.

3.6 is S-L-O-W, and has been dropped by Firefox just a few days ago. You can download a copy of TFF, it will not replace your FF, but will add all your bookmarks etc to the new version. Give it a spin, the speed increase will blow you away...

still stutters during video playback on youtube, idk, its not even stutter, its completely not moving (the video playback) while the sound just goes ahead, bad bad bad

If 3rd party memory was a problem you would have problems everywhere.

i go to plug in and it saids i dont have any add ons of this type installed. am I at the correct area

In a blank tab, type in about:config in the URL window, click go. You'll get a warning that says you'll void your warranty (spoof) click the button. You'll get a screen of all the operating parameters that can be changed in TFF.
In the filter window in the upper left of the screen type tenfourfox.plugins.enabled , you will get a line that should say default-boolean-false. by clicking on the line you will toggle it to userset-boolean-true . Close the tab and your done. You can now download a flash plug-in from the Adobe site.
Also make sure that you have the latest Quicktime, 7.7 for Leopard.
This will not make every vid play fine, but should improve the Flash encoded ones. You can also set the resolution lower on the Youtube vids, that helps too.

You may need to download a player, like elmedia player to play certain videos. No way around that.

While looking at a Youtube vid, right click on the image, you'll get a menu, select settings, select hardware acceleration. This doesn't always work on Macs, but worth a try. If it makes it worse turn it off.

Flash is not implemented well for Macs, poor software coding. Adobe says it will not update the Mac drivers
The poor performance is not your Mac, it's piss-poor software from Adobe.

There are some resources you should have installed for viewing vids, Perian from perian.org... ,Flip4mac from www.telestream.net... and XiphQT from www.xiph.org...

One other thing, if you have been using Facebook or are on Facebook, you may need to reboot your G5 to look at vids before logging back on to FB. FB loads a lot of scripts that tie up the processor, making vid playback poor. I don't know how bad this affects a G5, but it really kills a G3.

FYI, here is info on a hack for Flash 11 on PPCs. I have not tried it yet. lowendmac.com...

You said you are using FireFox. Have you tried Safari? Is it the same? If so, reset Safari and reset your PRAM.

To PRAM reset:
Turn the Mac completely off. Hit the power button then immediately press and hold "Command", "Option", "P", and "R". You will hear your normal chime but keep them held down. When you hear the second chime, let go.

Aside from that, try adding some DNS servers in your network settings. "8.8.88" and "8.8.4.4" are both great ones (from Google, I think).
