Why is the Smithsonian preventing any research into Giants?

It is very late here so maybe the ol' brain isn't processing properly. If I am misunderstanding you then please forgive me.

If by 'our' beliefs you are referring to the belief in gods versus aliens being the same I can see that. Many believe that what some people think of as gods are really aliens who visited in ancient times. If that is what you believe then great, but then why discount the grays or any other alien race for that matter. If there is a possibility of one alien race then there are equal possibilities of countless others because there is just as much evidence for one as the others.
