i am going to have to whole heartedly disagree with that statement. While i can see truth in the rest of your reply (except the part about money), i feel this line is completely false and part of the problem that i am dealing with.

Did you ever get to meet Mother Theresa? im curious how you came to the conclusion you presented, im not saying your wrong, maybe she said something to that effect or wrote it down and i am not aware of it, i just hope that it is not an assumption you have made to make and selfish acts, as opposed to selfless acts, seem acceptable.

Now be honest. How many times would you help someone when they repeatedly say to you, "Thanks moron, now go away."

Helping others in a time of need is merely a way of feeling good about ourselves.

Why? Who would do something that is entirely no concern of his? If we see a car accident and try to help, it's because we want to know that someone would be there for us if we got into an accident. This is NOT a bad thing.

I'm struggling to come up with a scenario for what would be considered a self-less act. Giving a kidney to a total stranger? Man, we would feel downright holy if we did that. We would be so loved, and famous because it would certainly hit the news. So, that's not it.

How about this: A murderoulsy cruel leader of a foreign country that has no ties to your own country, who is not a relative of anyone you know, is scheduled to be executed unless someone wishes to take his place in the electric chair. If you volunteer, this would be a selfless act. Stupid, but selfless.

in 2009 i was having lunch along a busy stretch of road in the disney area of kissimmee florida, we heard a loud screech of tires and i watched as a car plunged into the water(a retention pond) along the road. I immediately got up, ran across 6 lanes of traffic and dove into the water to try and help. As i did i could hear some one yeling at me to stop. In the 30 minutes i swam in that pond trying to locate the car a mass of police and fire responce formed around the pond. I dove repeatedly and frantically until i was grabbed by one of the responders and forced out of the water, i was then arrested and held in a cruiser for a bout 30 minutes while these responders (literally about 50 of them, just crowded the banks of the pond, no one went in while divers suited up and prepared to "recover" what there was. When the police cruiser pulled away with me in it and the divers were still not in the water...the charges were dropped, i lost my job(becasue of the arrest and because i didnt return to work after lunch) and a vacationing elderly couple lost thier lives...that is one reason i have this fear, because i know in my heart that something more could have been done, and it wasnt! and 2 people died...

Maybe it was thier time, maybe thier families were meant to suffer this loss in this way...maybe not and this was just the way it ended up. Yes this is a true story thier obitualries were posted in the Orlando Sentinal and i assuming in some paper in Ohio where they were from. My arrest report was longer...

Holy crap! This sounds like it's right out of a horror movie. Was there ever any mention of your heroic attempt to save them? You wrote "We heard a loud screech of tires." Why didn't the people you were with come forward to stop you from being arrested?

there wasnt in the obituary, im not sure about anywhere else, while at the police station i tried to get info to contact the next of kin in vein, probably because i was soo mad i felt their deaths could have been avoided had all those responders not been just standing thier and i let them all i know how i felt. The judge in the case even told me not to take such personal risks in the future...
