The problem is, that Americans use stuffing someone into a hole and forgetting they exist, as a means of viewing themselves as having a greater degree of righteousness to said person in the hole.

The entire reason why the American culture of vengeance where criminals are concerned, is so sick, is precisely because it is based on self-righteousness. The reason why criminals are dehumanised, is because of the American need to psychologically distance themselves from crime as much as possible. Their way of affirming to themselves that they would never do such things, is to punish those who do commit crimes as harshly as possible.
