Like the OP, I am a small business owner as well, and am thinking of starting another, different type of business, but am very hesitant. Businesses already barter quite a bit through their local chambers of commerce and other local business orgs. We do direct trade with a gym and pizza place in our strip mall on occasion.

I have this fantasy that the OP might appreciate: I've thought it would be awesome for small businesses to get together in solidarity and NOT make their quarterly employment tax payments to the federal government, and NOT withhold the other half from their employees. If one or two businesses did it, the IRS would make examples of them with a nice armed raid. If LOTS of businesses did it - what would they do?

It is hard for the individual to revolt, since they really have no power to tell their employer not to withhold taxes - the IRS will come after the employer for the full amount, so the employer has to do it. If the employers did it en masse, it would be a different scenario altogether. Just make sure you get out of the EFTPS system and change your bank or they'd steal it from you anyway.

schuyler, I do agree with your sentiments, but tend to really only feel that way towards those whining about how bad their life is because they/their parents wouldn't buy them something.

in fact i don't tend to bring up a message like yours because find it hypocrisy for anyone, using a computer on the internet, to ridicule someone else for living a "luxurious" life. come to the philippines and i will take you to villages with no electricity, no cell phone signal -- and in my opinion it's a much better life than anywhere in the usa.

I don't want my money back.

The thing I don't understand is, as technolgy inproves and becomes more efficient, why does the cost of living increase? Surly if their are more machines doing people's jobs, theirs more money to go round, not less...

To contribute to this thread, I have been out of the USA for many years now. I no longer pay taxes as well. Legally after the first year out of the country you no longer pay taxes for a salary below 80k usd a year. It is ridiculous to have to pay taxes during the first 12 months out of the country, but thats how it goes. Even if you make over 80k a year, outside of US soil where you get NO benefit of taxes (I don't believe serfs do anyways for federal tax, maybe state tax though), you will have to pay your income tax.

Being said, I'm out of the system in a region with organic food, free mountain spring water, and a low cost of living. I don't understand why people in the USA pay taxes except out of fear, or unless they can confirm the good/service they are directly receiving by contributing to insane taxes across the board... There aren't many that come to mind...
