Ive never been a computer savvy person so please help!! I'm leaving the company I've worked for the past 3 years and want to do a super clean up of my laptop. I have a flash drive to transfer some stuff but I don't want those rat bastards able to see any thing I've looked at online or read any emails on my personal email that they may be able to see or locate in the hard drive or something.

If it's a work computer you're tooled.

If you were accessing whatever you were accessing while at work, they already know - I assure you. Even if you formatted that computer they will have a record of your browsing history, and perhaps more.

I wouldn't worry about it, clear out your personal files and erase browser caches and be on your way.

If you ever logged in on one of their servers they already know or have access.
I worked as an administrative assistant for PeopleSoft right before the 9/11 attacks. The IT guy told me he could take my laptop and see every keystroke I ever made. I believe he could do it.

Working in IT if you wipe a disc you could be in trouble or even sued. Best just to clean off any files and clean out your Browser cache.

Wiping a hard drive wipes out Windows which is something your IT person will probably do anyway after they get the laptop back.

Oh and P.S. if you used "Company" email or online on company networks they already have copies of that (YEP).

But if you were emailing with your own home network with an online account like GMail or MSN no worries, or looking at PORN (shame, shame) cleaning out your Browser will take most of that away.

And honestly unless you are leaving because of a problem involving your laptop, IT people don't have the time to dig through your digital garbage (unless like I said prior to why you are leaving) to worry about your naughty habits.

Do not worry about deleting the

*cough*

PARTITION!

* cough*.

If the it-team is worth its salt. They already have a back up clone of your drive.

Lot a silly replies here!!

1. Do you know how to delete your internet history? if so do it.

2. Delete anything that you dont want them to see.

3. Empty the recycle bin

4. Create a new folder on your desktop.

5. Keep putting files (mp3's movies are good) into it untill you get a message saying your running out of disk space. This will ensure that the sectors on the drive are rewritten and nolonger contain your old stuff..

6. After you've had the disk full message delete the folder that you created.

7. Empty the recycle bin again.

msg me if you want more help.

On the contrary, a lot of good advice. Via the network a lot of valuable data could be preserved that your solution does absolutely nothing to address. You could incinerate the drive, wouldn't matter because the damage may already be done.
