A bone marrow transplant is a very expensive medical procedure and can cost millions of dollars to cure various kinds of leukemia. I have observed many patients denied a bone marrow transplant because of no insurance and also because their insurance company will not cover enough of the expenses. Many times these patients receive assistance from the community and also their friends and relatives in order to afford the transplant.

We have many AMERICAN CITIZENS who are denied necessary medical care because of no or inadequate insurance. So I went to work today only to discover that a non-citizen is getting a bone marrow transplant despite the fact that he is not a citizen and has no insurance. Who pays? There is no medicare or medicaid for this patient and he has no social security card. The hospital and physicians say they will just "write off" the expense! If this is the case, why didn't they just "write off" the cost of my surgery last year that cost $30,000 (after insurance). I do not understand this type of reasoning. Who is going to pay for his expensive anti-rejection drugs after the transplant? He has no job and no intention of working in the near future because of his illness.

Please do not think I am being harsh, I wish everyone could get the best medical treatment available for whatever is wrong with them. I just wish I knew how hospitals and doctors decide who gets treatment and who does not.

I am associated with a network that tries to find pay sources for people without insurance who need medical care for serious health problems and I am finding that we can get more assistance for uninsured non-citizens than Americans who are uninsured.

There seems to be more compassion for non-citizens than citizens when it comes to free healthcare. I have witnessed this firsthand and it bothers me that our American citizens are not being put to the front of the line for the donation of free medical care from hospitals.

I agree as I see this too. It's not only in hospitals but with government assistance and even traffic tickets. I don't understand, but as long as we let this to continue to happen...we will only see it more.

I always worry about all patients without a pay source who come into the hospital. I am sure they will try out all of the new "investigational drugs" and study protocols on this guy. He speaks no English and has no family. This is one of the reasons they do not usually offer this kind of charity care to English speaking Americans, they will not usually sign up for the investigational studies. Investigational drugs are free of charge.

As far as I'm concerned, the FDA approved drugs can be just as bad as the trial ones. Just because it is already FDA approved doesn't mean it works for everyone and is completely safe. Either is a risk imho.

It's the system that's to blame. They usually have surgical procedures or other costly medical surgeries they can "write off", it helps on taxes. No seriously.. It's a tax write off. No money in giving everyone free treatment so they pick and choose, ain't America grand.

What the REAL problem is is that being a doctor in America means taking out loans that you won't repay until your about 30 or 35. (You might be able to knock them out in your late twenties if your specialize)That's what your paying for.. THEIR education and insurance just incase you die under their care. Have you ever wondered why the Hospital charges like 15 bucks for an aspirin when you get a whole bottle for less than half? It's the same reason why a 20oz bottle is sky high at Sport Arenas. People are stupid enough to fall for it OR they have enough money.. so they don't care, it's all good.

Haven't you realized damn near everything in this country is a scam nowadays? Back in the day when folks were doing it because they loved doing it when it was pure. Now everyone's excuse is that f--kin line "It's a business".

No it's not. This is health care, people's lives. If your in it for profit, then your in the wrong business and that's the damn problem with this country.

Everyone has turned into money whores and don't want anyone to rock their boat. Now stuff is done for profit. And this is what you get... nothin
