In a recent article published by the International Herald Tribune it has been identified that Hepatitis E, a particularly nasty variant of Hepatitis which poses significant threats to pregnant women and their unborn children, is being found in significant numbers among the Iraqi population. In Sadr City 155 cases have arisen, while Mahmudiya has experienced 60 cases. It seems this variant spreads through drinking water supplies contaminated with raw sewage.

A virulent form of hepatitis that is especially lethal for pregnant women has broken out in two of Iraq's most troubled districts, Iraqi Health Ministry officials said in interviews here this week, and they warned that a collapse of water and sewage systems in the country is probably at the root of the illnesses.

During the first six months of 2004, there were as many cases as in all of 2002.

In yet another indication of the deteriorating safety of both water and food in Iraq, the number of reported cases of typhoid fever is up sharply this year, said Dr. Nima S. Abid, the ministry's director general of public health and primary health. Hospitals across the country are also full of children with severe forms of diarrhea, Abid said.

It seems that we are determined to cull the Iraqi population as much as possible while we're there. Whether it be direct killings through 'collateral damage' from ordinance, long-term killings through the dispensation of tons of depleted uranium shells during fighting, or killings through the destruction of infrastructure thereby spreading disease, our 'liberation' of the people of Iraq is taking a heavy toll on the civilian population of Iraq.

Do we really need another poor, disease-ridden country to soak up billions of dollars of international aid? Apparently, we do as the Bush administration is serving us one on a platter.
