On June 1, 2001 the Russian Space Forces were "reborn" as an independant section of the Russian military.

again, on the 1st of December 2011, it was replaced by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces.

USSPACECOM merged with United States Strategic Command in October 2002

en.wikipedia.org...

" "Leaders in Strategic Deterrence and Preeminent Global Warfighters In Space and Cyberspace" "

It is charged with space operations (such as military satellites), information operations (such as information warfare), missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR), global strike and strategic deterrence (the United States nuclear arsenal), and combating weapons of mass destruction.

there was a definite progression, what have you heard lately, if anything?

I think perhaps you have some incorrect disinformation about the US side of a space force. There is no way that thread on ATS can explain the whole business, but I'll try to give you some insight.

The following is taken from Military Space Forces: The Next 50 Years by John M. Collins and Commissioned by the US Congress. The book is a misleading whitewash of our space efforts for clueless members of Congress yet it does give significant details from which to understand this drastic road that has been laid out and followed to an unknown degree.

"The evolutionary process started on September 1, 1982 with US Air Force Space Command. Naval Space Command emerged about a year later (October 1, 1983). Those two organizations originally lacked formal connecting links. Respective services still administer and support assigned forces, but 'authoritative direction over all aspects of military operations, joint training, and logistics' soon passed to the United States Space Command (USSPACECOM), a unified command activated on September 23, 1985. USSPACECOM's initial Army component, a four-officer Space Planning Group, became a full-fledged Army Space Command on April 7, 1988.” P.75.

This folks was not the birth of the US Space Force, simply the formal dedication of such a service. The Space Defense Imitative ("Star Wars'), was the real origin and set forth much earlier to bring this program to life. --And if you think the SDI disappeared along with the some of its oft-ridiculed programs, think again. That was exactly what they wanted you to think.

There is a clear link between the US space program and the appearance of the mysterious triangles in the mid 1970s and their continued presence in our skies. the triangles must be seen as devices that is replacing all types of rocket, both those used as a transports or weapon's delivery platforms. --Not to mention the disappearance of any current mechanism the US publically has for lofting humans into space.

The benign revelations of the English hacker Terrance McKinnon should be understood as simple evidence of the growth of the program into the actual deployment of manned ships-of-war into space. That, folks, is where most of the black budget money has gone over the decades

It can be argued, as Reagan suggested several times, that the world would unite if there emerged a credible ET force that threatened Earth. Many of us know absolutely that alien UFOs are currently here. However they have not enslaved us yet nor caused direct harm. Still, the historical details of the coming of UFOs into our awareness is stunningly clear. Fabled friend or foe, of course, we would have attempted to develop defense systems to counter them and

to reproduce their remarkable UFOs in some form as an automatic, all-encompassing defensive strategy. You don’t let strangers walk into your front door.

Yet, it is plain to see that having a space force with supreme abilities to control major conflicts on the Earth from orbits and from the Moon is the ultimate "high ground." Regardless of the presence of aliens or not, the program is effective in preventing major wars between nations. Perhaps that was the plan from the beginning and there is no alien threat. The Soviet system was obviously failing at that time and there were no real enemies… or was there?. But China was stirring. and as Russia fell away it was plain to see that the Chinese would be eventually emerging as a major threat for the dominance of the world.

You have to decide for yourself exact where lays the kernel of truth about all of these factors. But the US Space Force exists is shrouded in secrecy. Make no mistake about that. Whether you want to grant them fine ships-of-war for defensive purposes against aliens or fellow humans is left to your inclinations.

A space borne laser to take out junk. Is that an excuse? Certainly has other uses.
