This is probably the first time I have ever seen a lady not freak out and scream her lungs out when disaster strikes.

Go mom! What a lucky child to have such a brave mom.

Though maybe they could have gotten under the table? I dunno...

the most important aspect of this is not your ability to correctly monitor the appropriateness of other people's reactions in a situation with panic potential.

learn your role, know your role, stick to your role.

Dads are different. What dad could resist the fun of a restaurant on a roller coaster?

Little boys react differently to these things I think. I would have loved to live on an active amusement park ride, but not all of us could have been a guest of Michael Jackson.

Too soon? Could care less about that billionaire, I just wanted his backyard!

All I can assume is that rather then ignoring the possibility of an earthquake like most people due to subconscious fear, she has accepted it as a reality and prepared herself for it.
Also, a mother with her child will usually forget about her own well being and think about her kids.

here's the thing... he's at the age where they cry the loudest and go on and on and on... bless their hearts, but she knows that if she gets alarmed he is going to pipe up and not be able to console him after he starts.

she's thinking... "if I die, I die... but oh hell if he starts crying"

Sorry to break the mood here, that's not a 9.0 M shake!!

If it's a 9.0 M shake, there won't be a single plate on the top of the table! A lot of structures would also collapse as the vibrational energy would actually overcome gravity.

While a 9.0 M did happen on that fateful day, it happened out some distance off the coast so inland, the quake would be a lot weaker

According to this, it's probably 7:

Sometimes, when things are really out of your hands there's not much you can do but comfort your child and try not to show them you are afraid.

This is a natural response for most parents, the goal of keeping your child safe from harm or being frightened, overides your normal response to maybe panic a little.

Have done it a few times, not with earthquakes but other events where you would usualy be a little less calm.
