This enormous tornado erupting from the surface of the sun is big enough to swallow the Earth. In fact, it could swallow five Earths.

Discovered using NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory satellite, this colossal twisting mass is made up of superheated gas at a temperature of between 90,000 and 3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit.

Ummm.....what!? That is absolutely HUGE!

Admittedly, I know very little on the subject however, from what this report is saying, this particular solar tornado is 1,860 times larger than normal!

As the article states, these events usually precede CME's (Coronal Mass Ejections). Experts/knowledgeable souls, does this mean that a massive solar flare will happen?

What does this have relevance to in relation to proceedings on earth?

I am not fear mongering nor drawing any conclusions as I honestly don't know enough to do so and would go against denying ignorance.

I will seek more sources info, in the meantime I look forward to what input members have on the matter.

ETA: Can not find anything on the NASA website...the search for additional sources continues.

Seriously, thank you for sharing this, That is simply beautiful to see. On another note, I wouldn't necessarily worry and the reason is simple. It's only been the last few years we've even gotten the kind of very high resolution viewing of the Sun that we have now and VERY recently we first got 360 degree viewing at all. So, I'm thinking no one really knows yet what is normal or worrisome when we've missed a few billion years of activity for comparison.

It's quite a sight though....the sheer scale of the Sun and the complexity of what happens there is breathtaking.

the image dates have 2011-09-25 on them. They are 5 months old!! (on the spot bogey maths) the article is yesterday, but we only get these images almost half a year later?? >> it makes me think if there was some 'earth shattering event' we would never hear about it in time from NASA.............

Scientists have previously seen smaller solar tornadoes with other sun-observing satellites but this one — spotted in September 2011 — is thought to be the first one ever filmed (left). Since then, researchers have seen at least one more solar tornado, an Earth-sized twister seen in the video below.

Ummm.... did anyone notice in the video on the OP's link that there were FOUR of them???

Not just that, but if you look closely, they are CONNECTING with each other.

I think this is amazing that such vortices can form on the sun. There is definitely a strong and complex magnetic component to this and I wonder what these pictures and videos will reveal.

YES!! I was gonna bring up the same point, the one on the left even seems to split into multiple tornadoes
