Fuel price at my local garage here in Co Wexford is €1.65, which just converted to £1.38 per litre.

I think the length of any dispute is the key.

I did say the previous administration, not the current. Tories are in no way socialist.

What i'm saying is too many people have got too used to sucking at the government teat for things, yet want a reduction in taxes. I want a reduction in the taxes i pay and realise that something will have to give, unless of course you're advocating we return to borrowing to pay for the said tax breaks and saddle our kids with more debt

I am not advocating more borrowing, nor am i advocating privatising industry in order to make a quick buck, because that just makes everything worse. I believe that we should start nationatlising certain things, such as the rail industry. Then our country could make money, and use that money to cut tax's, maintain structure (creating jobs right there) and so on. I don't believe that everything should be nationalised, nor should everything be privatised, but there is an equilibrium at some point.

I guess you are too young to remember British Rail. The privatised rail industry - though flawed - is 100 times better than the state owned British rail.

On topic. The problems with people like tanker drivers is that they can hold an unreasonable power and the Unions can use them to push their own agendas. I have no problem with Unions per se, but it is sometimes the Unions who are being unreasonable in their demands rather than the employers.

Areas of the NHS are becoming privatised with the new plans being brought in, against the advice from many doctors, consultants and nurses. They already came out and said that they are thinking of privatising the royal mail, they are privatising more roads, calling for more private investors, the new academies coming in with education, and they've only been in for a couple of years.

With British rail, I've heard both sides, that it was better for short journeys, but terrible for long distance. But now we have advanced in transport technologies, there are magnet trains in Japan that are always on time, quicker, and cheaper to maintain. Yes, to get that we will need a complete re-work of the network, but hey, thats another couple thousand new jobs created right there. With the current rail system costs sky rocket year after year, with no real noticable inprovments apart from the lines connected to London.

Excuse me, I know not much about the history of British Railways but i'll tell you this. Continental European, public owned rail networks are demonstrably better than their British equivalents ... and they're less expensive too.

To the issue. The Conservative part of the government seems to be deliberately exacerbating this issue, as with public sector pay/pensions. I think they're actively looking for trouble, to bring their own voters into line & to discredit their Liberal Democrat partners. That way, the choice at the next election will be more clear, Conservative or Labor, and the electorate will be divided as never before.

Division & disunity are not of God. Neither are the Tories !

But tax payers still pay for the railways we just don't receive any of the profit and still pay high rail fares. Private companies take any profits. We pay for the railways both in tax and on fares. Works out well for some, but not most.

in a way i wish everyone would stop assuming that everyone lives in a town where you can either push bike or catch public transport.
i live about ten miles from the nearest town and public transport is about 5 miles away and only on Thursdays.
i have to have a car.
i care for my partner who is type 1 diabetic and my father who has lung cancer.
my partner can pushbike at a push but my dad definitely can not walk or pushbike anywhere hes out of breathe within a few minutes.

i really get annoyed when smug 'push bikers' say get off your fat ass and bike there or it wont affect me.
like people have said yes it will affect you, how do you think food gets to your supermarket or market stall. what powers the ambulance or fire engine you need.

i haven't started stock piling i have a feeling the government have done this on purpose, to gauge peoples reactions or get more tax.

I was thinking the same thing, there is something about the timing of this that smells a bit fishy.
The unions are threatening to go on strike for no real reason.
The panic buying of fuel has been caused by politicians and the media hyping this to death and showing the nation that people have started panic buying.
All this at the same time Iran cuts off their oil to britain. Come on theres something fishy about this.
I know Iran contributes very little to oil in britain but there must be something going on here.
Perhaps to mask the rise in oil prices which is already at an all time high and blame it on the strike?

However I will NOT be going out of my way to 'panic buy'
