Actually, I wouldn't be so certain about that. SS was the first agency to grab me after taking my federal exams. I didn't want to work for them and the whole trick with my interview was convincing them not to take me without turning them down and hurting my eligibility to work for another agency. It's true that my offer wasn't for presidential bodyguard duty and the actual functions I would be performing was not fully disclosed to me at the time. There was a reason I was in-demand but I was certainly nobody special nor highly educated or credentialed.

That cost me some time after the Secret Service claimed me and took me off the hiring register but on the next go-around I got to where I wanted to go, sort of. The next trick was to keep from being made into some sort of federal cop for one agency or another. I had no desire to be any kind of authority figure. Eventually I found a really nice fit.

Dr. Paul and I seem to see eye-to-eye on a number of levels. Too bad we never met. He has my vote though.

I feel the same way. When I got out of the Marine Corps in 2006, the Secret Service AND the CIA tried to recruit me. I had 2 interviews with the CIA and one with the SS. It was more of a get-to-know-them type of thing. I was not really interested, but like you, I also had to attempt to "turn them down" without looking like some type of terrorist. I swear, I was paranoid for a while and actually felt pressured to join out of thinking they would do me or my family harm...

I won't go as far to say as I am not highly educated or intelligent - or physically impressive for that matter - but I can see why both agencies wanted me - I'm currently working as an IT Director at a Major Federal Credit Union.. a very far cry from what I could have been doing ;-).

I'm sure the money is better now. It might not be quite as exciting, but I can get excited over technology, so I am happy.

Ron Paul has said if elected he would get rid of the SS and hire a private security firm on his own dollar that would cost 10x less and do a 100% better job. He has said he already even has the security firm in mind.

Why would millionaires need state sanctioned security guards that we pay for?

His comment about welfare has nothing to do with the job they do. He is refering to Santorum requesting SS. Santorum is not a president elect, he is a candidate for the position of president elect, making him a private citizen. Ron Paul is the same, a private citizen. That said, it is not right to request an expensive tax-paid service when you are not is a position that warrants it. To do so would be welfare.

Romney, Santorum and Gingrich want the Secret Service protection because it makes them look more important and 'presidential' in the photo ops and handshake lines.

And to protect them from glitter.

Some of you guys are reading too much into this.

He simply doesn't believe in using tax payer money for something that the taxpayers shouldn't be FORCED to pay for in the first place, ESPECIALLY if it is merely a presidential candidate (not even a president yet).

Whatever he can do to keep government costs down, he'll do it.

-willing to take 40k/year presidential salary
-refused congressional pension/retirement package
-travels economy in flights to and from d.c. and his home office
-returns unused congressional funds to the U.S. treasury
