this just caught my eye. i think this is completely ridiculous. talk about sexist oppression in the work place.
its like me being a skinny male being denied a job at a fast food joint, just because im not obese.
lets get real.

Israel’s skinny model ban: New law requires body mass index of 18.5 or a doctor’s note

The fashion industry has long debated the use of ultrathin models. Now lawmakers in Israel are attempting to ban them.

A new law passed on Monday requires that male and female models in Israel must have a body mass index (or BMI, a measure of weight proportionate to height) of no less than 18.5—a standard used by the World Health Organization—or a note from a doctor saying they are not underweight before they can be hired for a modeling job. A six-foot-tall model, for example, must weigh no less than 136.5 pounds.

I don't know that banning a specific body type is the right thing to do - but encouraging that ALL healthy body types are used would be satisfactory.

No your missing the point.

They 're not talking about the 'Work Place' as you think. They are talking about Models not eating to the point of stavation to get into magazines that our kids can look at and get paranoid about them not looking what they are told is 'Normal'. TBH I agree with this, naturally skinny people fine but when people start staving themselfs due to thier vain warped view of what they think beauty is and think beauty meaning is getting photographed for displaying themselfs apon fasion, glamour or advertising magazines.

This has been PROOVEN to send our kids into self-esteam/confidence and even bullying issues due to judging people by an apperance class socialisation which is why alot fo girl are bullied at school, purley becuase they dont want to look or do not feel coftable looking like the other girls.

I understand that most teenage girls talk about how each other look (bitching or not) but this is one negative issue which to me can be helped, by getting rid of this attitude in modeling, this size zero, vain, self centred, ignorant, show off, famouse for fame only, I'm so skinny which makes me beautiful attitude, because it's doing more damage than actual real good, a woman who is staving herself is a discuting and cheap way to portray what a beautiful women is and it makes alot and i mean alot of girls and women feel insecure about themselfs.

And I think it should be banned for good!

not sure how large 18.5 is but hey if it prevents women having to starve themselves just to stay in a certain size range then thats fine, some of these women are already tiny and then when asked to be even thinner is crazy, and well them super thin women look ugly because they are so overweight, if we cant see their ribs all the time or hipbones sticking out like crazy its fine by me.

that's one way of looking at it
another way - the one i prefer - is to understand that these models do impact image and self-image and in consequence might impact the lives of young people who think they are fat. anorexia is a real problem.
add to this that pressure on models to be skinny as hell will drop and allow these models to be more healthy.

what about people like me who cant gain weight if there life depended on it.
medical information should not be needed to apply for a modeling job.

i know the law will promote healthy living, it's like putting a hamburger
in front of them. if they eat it they pass the pre employment screening

just not well thought out is what im saying.

I'd love to hear from a professional model or someone close to that world on this.....

The documentaries I've watched about the back-stage realities of the modeling industry are pretty vile though. It's left me with the impression that this sort of thing was needed.

The stories of what these girls take, eat/don't eat and do to abuse their own bodies so they appear in a way they just aren't meant to appear outside of childhood are really over the top and extreme. Unless the industry changed like this, the girls never could. By hearing them interviewed in the past, it sounds like those who wouldn't comply with being razor thin by any means necessary simply got the boot and another gleefully ran up to take their place in the race to be a bean pole.

Well like i said it aint out to ban skinny models it is out to ban people who starve themselfs, BMI is related to you height/weight ratio and is a way to make sure your are at a normal/healthy weight. Its nothing to do with them eating for a pass its just like a health check up for any other job( except a job where people aspire to look like you), its got certain health requirements (and for this industry its finally due, or atleast in Israel). i would rather children/women even men be trying to look normal than normal staving themselfs to be skinny.

I know it not fair for skinny people, but it aint far for fat people either cos thier not alowed on the cover of Vogue or (Insert other teenage girl aimed Vain mag here). But they are doing ti fro a good reason which i support.

First of all, you need to bottle whatever it is in your system that is not allowing you to gain weight.

I've always had to provide proof of a pre-employment medical exam. So I don't see this as unusual at all. As for the decision to take a stance against undernourished rail-thin models, good for them. They are not the first to do this.

a physical is different. if they are healthy enough to pass that, then let them model
dosnt need to be specific stating that you do not have an eating disorder. thats like
saying far sided models cant walk the runway, because of a safety risk.

Although it is taking an extreme position, I still have to give Israel a high five for taking a stand on this issue. The problem of anorexia and bulimia are nearly epidemic in teenagers, even in males, and this appears to be a global issue. The side effects of these diseases extend way beyond the psychosocial and can result in severe depression and loss of life, not to mention the physical side effects and how severely the body is shut down from lack of nutrition (heart dysrhythmias, hair loss, bone loss, acidosis for starters). Young teenagers are very self conscious and its way beyond time to exemplify healthy females who have some weight on them. When will the beauty industry get this? At least Israel does!
