Materials scientists have not yet arrived at a full understanding of the effect, but the current theory of triboluminescence — based upon crystallographic, spectroscopic, and other experimental evidence — is that upon fracture of asymmetrical materials, charge is separated. When the charges recombine, the electric discharge ionizes the surrounding air, causing a flash of light.

Michael Persinger is the researcher working with pulsating and targeted magnetic fields in the brain. He and his team created a "helmet" using nails wrapped with many turns of wire to form cylindrical solenoids. These were then mounted in a sort of football helmet to allow them to hang over different parts of the brain. When connected to a computer as a "printer", various patterns can be output to magnetically stimulate the brain with specific and repeatable patterns. One of the most fascinating results of the experiment involved the use of subjects with their eyes closed. While a certain pattern was projected or "printed" to the solenoids, a flashlight was aimed toward the subject's eyes and slowly lowered. (a loose description follows) Asked to describe what they saw, EVERY SUBJECT said the same thing, "I see a UFO coming down, it is landing. Now there are small grey people coming out of it towards me. They are taking me into the ship. Now they are doing somekind of physical exploration. I am now being taken from the ship." As the flashlight beam is lifted up, the subject's say that the UFO is now ascending and moving away.
Several authors today think that UFOs, or at least a large part of them, are geophysical phenomena essentially linked with seismicity.

There is no question of expounding this theory in full here. It is complex, still evolving, and is the subject of numerous papers. Its outlines are presented, for instance, by Persinger, Wanderer or Maugé. Its essential bases are very well summarised by Persinger himself in the following passage:
”This theory requires the analysis of the UFO problem at three separate levels: 1, the large scale space-time pattern; 2, the particular UFO event, and 3, the neuropsychological contributions of the observer [...] Each component is characterized by a major hypothesis. First, most UFO phenomena are generated by processes associated with crustal deformation (or ‘earthstress’) over geophysical time. Second, the single UFO event is a highly localised (a few metres), transient (a few minutes), extraordinarily energetic electromagnetic-like manifestation of this earthstress. Third, the rich variety but persistentt common themes of close UFO encounters are a predictable consequence of the direct effects of the UFO event upon the electrochemical activities of the observer’s brain.”However, TST presents a certain number of ambiguities and weak points, some of which are seriously damaging to the model. Rutkowski has already presented some objections, insisting on the question of the selection of ufological data, statistical problems, and the weakness of the geophysical basis of the model.

I think it's a plausible explanation for many sightings, but it doesn't explain them all. I think between that explanation, top secret military aircraft, and time displacement theories, we can explain all of the UFOs as terrestrial occurences.
In my opinion we are getting close to building the type of UFOs that are claimed to move very quickly. I think anti-gravity drives coupled with time displacement are responsible for the more impressive sightings. Think about it!

The theory elaborated in this thread could very well explain many UFO sightings near tectonic subduction and collision zones. But I agree that many other sightings can indeed be traced back to covert military operations and tests. I haven't heard of the time displacement theory so I might have a look at that in the coming days.

I have been intrigued by Persinger's earthquake theories regarding UFOs before; but I hadn t realized that literal visual phenomena triggered by piezoelectric phenomena were the result. I had thought that the seismic activity would generate magnetic fields, which then could then induce in susceptible individuals (Persinger claims that his "God-helmet" studies point towards some people being more sensitive to magnetic fields) a typical UFO sighting or even abduction scenario. Perhaps these effects work together? Even so, I do not think that even if a UFO sighting results from magnetic phenomena that that necessarily explains those phenomena.

He has been working with a psychic, the famous guy from the CIA project. If true this would also have interesting implications for the many witness reports involving telepathy, and even engages Carl Jungs Collective Unconscious theories for UFO
