Since the 1960's the UFO phenomena has been frequently observed and reported in regions of tectonic plate fractures, eventually due to a phenomena called the "Persinger Earthstress Model" or the "Tectonic Strain Theory" (TST) proposed by Micheal Persinger, a cognitive neuroscience researcher and university professor.

The How and Why of UFO's

This effect is mostly known as the piezoelectric effect by scientists, it is said that 40 percent of UFO sightings occur near seismic faults which produce intense electromagnetic fields creating bodies of light that some interpret as glowing UFOs, a seemingly not so rare occurance of ball lightning caused by seismic activity.

What's your take on this?

I like this. Thank you OP.

With roughly 95% of reported sightings amounting to misidentification of common things like Venus, Jupiter, conventional or military aircraft, as well as common meteorological phenomenon, we now have this this to add into the book of understanding this field of inquiry.

40% of cases are in seismically active areas and a direct result of witnessing this natural occurrence?
Very cool.

this further narrows down, and cuts out some of the fluff.

Of course we still have the more nuts and bolts type metallic seeming UFOs which could very well be terrestrial craft belonging to secret military programs, but, that's just conjecture,

It's nice to see more and more understood about the hows, whats and whys that cause and produce these sightings, at least of this type which enables us to eliminate and identify certain reports quicker to allow closer scrutiny of the remaining unexplained.

Thansk again OP

Indeed, this certainly doesn't explain all UFO sightings, but it is a convenient model to apply when investigating individual cases near tectonic plate fractures, for instance those occuring at the west coast of north america.

Apart from that, Paul Devereux, an author, researcher and lecturer at the Princenton Unversity, advocates a variant geophysical theory similar to TST, the Earthlights theory. However, unlike Persinger, Devereaux generally restricts such effects to the immediate vicinity of a fault line. Devereux's approach also differs from Persinger's in holding triboluminescence rather than piezoelectricity as the "more likely candidate" for the production of naturally occurring UFOs.

Materials scientists have not yet arrived at a full understanding of the effect, but the current theory of triboluminescence — based upon crystallographic, spectroscopic, and other experimental evidence — is that upon fracture of asymmetrical materials, charge is separated. When the charges recombine, the electric discharge ionizes the surrounding air, causing a flash of light.

It gets really interesting when considering Persinger's theory on hallucinations caused by electromagnetic fields generated in the temporal lobe.

Michael Persinger is the researcher working with pulsating and targeted magnetic fields in the brain. He and his team created a "helmet" using nails wrapped with many turns of wire to form cylindrical solenoids. These were then mounted in a sort of football helmet to allow them to hang over different parts of the brain. When connected to a computer as a "printer", various patterns can be output to magnetically stimulate the brain with specific and repeatable patterns. One of the most fascinating results of the experiment involved the use of subjects with their eyes closed. While a certain pattern was projected or "printed" to the solenoids, a flashlight was aimed toward the subject's eyes and slowly lowered. (a loose description follows) Asked to describe what they saw, EVERY SUBJECT said the same thing, "I see a UFO coming down, it is landing. Now there are small grey people coming out of it towards me. They are taking me into the ship. Now they are doing somekind of physical exploration. I am now being taken from the ship." As the flashlight beam is lifted up, the subject's say that the UFO is now ascending and moving away.

But keep in mind, Persinger's claims regarding the effects of environmental geomagnetic activity on paranormal experiences have not been independently replicated and, like his findings regarding the God helmet, may simply be explained by the suggestibility of participants.

Persinger’s Tectonic Strain Theory:
Strengths and Weaknesses

Several authors today think that UFOs, or at least a large part of them, are geophysical phenomena essentially linked with seismicity.

...

There is no question of expounding this theory in full here. It is complex, still evolving, and is the subject of numerous papers. Its outlines are presented, for instance, by Persinger, Wanderer or Maugé. Its essential bases are very well summarised by Persinger himself in the following passage:

”This theory requires the analysis of the UFO problem at three separate levels: 1, the large scale space-time pattern; 2, the particular UFO event, and 3, the neuropsychological contributions of the observer [...] Each component is characterized by a major hypothesis. First, most UFO phenomena are generated by processes associated with crustal deformation (or ‘earthstress’) over geophysical time. Second, the single UFO event is a highly localised (a few metres), transient (a few minutes), extraordinarily energetic electromagnetic-like manifestation of this earthstress. Third, the rich variety but persistentt common themes of close UFO encounters are a predictable consequence of the direct effects of the UFO event upon the electrochemical activities of the observer’s brain.”However, TST presents a certain number of ambiguities and weak points, some of which are seriously damaging to the model. Rutkowski has already presented some objections, insisting on the question of the selection of ufological data, statistical problems, and the weakness of the geophysical basis of the model.

I think it's a plausible explanation for many sightings, but it doesn't explain them all. I think between that explanation, top secret military aircraft, and time displacement theories, we can explain all of the UFOs as terrestrial occurences.

In my opinion we are getting close to building the type of UFOs that are claimed to move very quickly. I think anti-gravity drives coupled with time displacement are responsible for the more impressive sightings. Think about it!

The theory elaborated in this thread could very well explain many UFO sightings near tectonic subduction and collision zones. But I agree that many other sightings can indeed be traced back to covert military operations and tests. I haven't heard of the time displacement theory so I might have a look at that in the coming days.

Apparently you can't have one without the other, anti-grav and time displacement that is - from what I've read. The science is beyond me though.........

Can anyone elaborate on the time displacement theory as google hasn't really helped finding much on the topic in regards to UFOs. In fact this thread is shows at the top of the search results.

Lot of great information in this thread, thanks for sharing it. A related phenomena has been observed and studied in Hessdalen and other places, though you're probably already aware of that.

One of the hypotheses put forth is that contraction and expansion caused by varying temperatures can likewise produce the piezoelectricity, for example if water seeps into the ground or through crevasses and later freezes, it will expand and potentially push the strata around generating friction. As a result we need not limit association of this phenomena to major fault lines alone, it can happen in the mountains or any other region that experiences extreme temperature variations.

Cheers.

hiya boony... check the following paper... www.uapreporting.org... there is definitely something with the em fields... hessdalen, and generally speaking plasma physics are tough nuts to crack... so many variables interplay & each unique config produces certain 'hypothesizable' progress.... but all in the right direction, evolution of science as it were... but in any case, to speed up our learning of said phenomena, i believe more funding is needed, more exotic forms of surveillance need to be placed in... it's like the specialists who get too narrowed down in their world view, broader perspectives are needed *cough* like satellite monitoring from above...
the reason why i say that is because i believe one of the key players is the birkeland current... en.wikipedia.org... read up on its history, still the key people behind it are not being given due recognition... i don't want to start an 'electric universe' debate here, but nonetheless, science always has a tough time recognizing 'new' traits... just like the earthquake lights... en.wikipedia.org... anyhow, i'll stop now before i delve into bickering...
we need to find the common denominator...

Min Min light

Will-o'-the-wisp

Naga fireball

Chir Batti

Marfa lights

Paulding Light

St. Elmo's fire

Gurdon Light

Hornet Spooklight

Brown Mountain Lights

and not to forget the skinwalker ranch... there isn't any info coming from bigelow sadly... alienz?

This may well account for some remaining "unknowns," but if it could account for all UFO sightings that couldn't be legitimately debunked, there would be no need to withhold all that gun-camera footage from the public, would there?

I have been intrigued by Persinger's earthquake theories regarding UFOs before; but I hadn t realized that literal visual phenomena triggered by piezoelectric phenomena were the result. I had thought that the seismic activity would generate magnetic fields, which then could then induce in susceptible individuals (Persinger claims that his "God-helmet" studies point towards some people being more sensitive to magnetic fields) a typical UFO sighting or even abduction scenario. Perhaps these effects work together? Even so, I do not think that even if a UFO sighting results from magnetic phenomena that that necessarily explains those phenomena.

On the subject of the non-replicable results; it would be nice to see another group try. P himself claims they didn t have sufficiently patterned fields.

His latest "tack" for his work involves using the earth's magnetic field as an upload and download medium for telepathy, somewhat like a natural hardrive. He has been working with a psychic, the famous guy from the CIA project. If true this would also have interesting implications for the many witness reports involving telepathy, and even engages Carl Jungs Collective Unconscious theories for UFO
