Norwegian military transport plane with 5 people on board missing and feared to have crashed

OSLO - A Norwegian military transport plane with five people aboard went missing Thursday during an exercise and was feared to have crashed in bad weather in a mountainous area in northern Sweden, officials said. The C-130 was heading from Evenes, on Norway's Arctic coast, to the Swedish city of Kiruna when it disappeared from radar screens just before 3 p.m. (1400 GMT), rescue co-ordinators said. "We have to assume that we are looking for a plane that has crashed," Norwegian military spokesman John Espen Lien told The Associated Press. A military helicopter searching the area picked up an emergency signal near mount Kebnekaise, 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Kiruna, Swedish air rescue spokesman Jonas Sundin told AP.

They still haven't found it, not a single trace of it. Hercules is pretty big plane, but there isn't much people living in that area, and its simply wilderness. During the night, infrared camera noticed something, but they didn't found anything around that area. Search area is 5x5 kilometers and there is pretty bad weather with snowstorm.

I´ve been following this one closely, and it has my interest piqued.
Especially the nightly infrared-thing. Looking forward hearing more about the whole thing.

This sucks...

Hopefully there are no fatalities. How far away is the closest military base / populated area that could head in that direction?

They believe that plane went missing around here:
goo.gl...

So as you see, whole area is just wilderness with mountains, Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise is nearby. No towns around there.

C-130 is not a "huge" plane. C5, C141, KC10, C17... all bigger. I've flown on all 5 of them.

I flew C-141s and C-130s

Ya, if this plane went down in rugged terrain I would bet it was a total lost. Typically for C-130s, we flew very low for our training missions and in this case they most likely impacted the ground at 200 kts.

Here's a rather large millitary exercise in Northern Norway, so they were most likely training tactical flight.

The terrain between departure airport and destination is deep valleys and high mountains, and my guess is either cfit or they caught a mountain rotor. (I fly in this area for living)

They have found some metal parts that smell kerosene. I couldn't find any english link yet. Searching is hard, since there is risk of avalanches now.

Yes, it seems it crashed to mountain with high speed. Parts are scattered around in large area. Bodies of crew have not been found and it seems there is no change of finding crew alive.

What a depressing story! After watching that video of the crash site, I would be surprised if any bodies were found.
